An #ILSupt recently told me one adjustment the IHSA should consider is having higher seeds travel to lower seeds in the first round of the IHSA tournament. A No. 1 seed would travel to a No. 16. Why? Let’s discuss. And before the “home-field advantage” crowd jumps in, please look at the full high school sports kingdom - not just your program’s castle. Here’s today’s reality with high school sports at many schools: When kids know a final game is going to be a blowout, many quit before it even happens. Others suddenly “can’t make it.” Why ride a bus an hour to lose 8-0, 56-0 or 25-0, 25-0? It happens across all sports more than people want to admit. It’s getting worse. You just don’t hear about it, because most prep media is dead. What’s left often only covers winners or is paid by school programs to cover and rank them. A coach told me this recently: “We were the No. 1 seed. The team we drew in the regional semis won its play-in game, then all the seniors quit because they saw they had to play us and wanted to go to Great America instead. Coach showed up with nine players. We played 9-v-9 for a half, won 6-0 and got permission to end it early. Then we had pizza together.” This is another prime example of adults running the same hamster scheduling wheel, because “that’s the way it’s always been done.” Games cost money: Transportation. Officials. Staffing. Athletic trainers. Field maintenance. If you saw what schools are paying for transportation alone since 2019, many of you would be stunned. You’d be floored. So instead of protecting the status quo, maybe the better question is this: How do we help lower-tier programs keep kids engaged and showing up? How do we help the high school sports kingdom? One coach said this to me today: “Honestly, (the ILSupt’s idea) would be fun. Imagine an elite suburban program having to play at a CPS school? People would scream bloody murder. But it would expose kids to different environments and perspectives. Over the years, it’s opened our players’ eyes and created way more empathy for schools that don’t have what we have.” #MoreThanJUSTGames #IHSA

Others suddenly “can’t make it.”

Why ride a bus an hour to lose 8-0, 56-0 or 25-0, 25-0?

It happens across all sports more than people want to admit. It’s getting worse.

@BrianRe25284379 Thanks for the comment. A #ILSupt and I were talking about just this earlier this morning. There most likely will be, but right now you need to stabilize the ship because there are other kids on the team impacted because of all of this. #IHSA

#Quotable from #ILSupt in Hinsdale South conference: “Mom should move him, we would take him. You can tell there is some politics going on, and that’s not right for kids.” #Quotable from #ILSupt: “What doesn’t make sense is that they demoted the previous coach, but let him stay in the program. That just shows the poor leadership at Hinsdale, which continues to have problems. Look at its previous three Supts. and recent board problems. They’re having a hard time finding its next Supt., because no one of quality will touch that district right now. The AD is an at-will position. If he didn’t know or did know and didn’t run this up the chain, I would replace him.” #IHSA #HinsdaleCut 2/2 https://t.co/4okzaX54Ag

#IHSA student athletes: This email just came from a state official. I cropped to protect the person from state backlash. State leaders are pointing at #JesseRuiz & #ILGov benching you. #ILSupt told me today: “They’re hanging #DrEzike out to dry.” It’s time for #KidsToWin.

#Chicago-area #ILSupt this morning: “We’ve been in school 8 weeks now, no issues.” It’s time for #JesseRuiz, #IDPH to show the data. Remember, they had 🏀 medium risk & didn’t know why at presser. “They don’t have the data,” Supt adds. It’s time #IHSA https://t.co/L7EDkCJqOX

Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 8:13 am.: First official communication between #IHSA, #JesseRuiz & #DrEzike. More than 7 months later, unlike every other state in the U.S., #ILGov, IHSA & #ILSupt still have not formed a working-together committee. 1/2

Another #ILSupt speaking up. Again, as I previously noted, look where the Supts are and aren’t talking. Every Supt. I’ve spoken to in Northern Illinois have noted why. There is a reason. We talk about not bullying, but adults bully more than kids. Pay attention today. #IHSA

Pay attention: Large #ILSupt call took place today, expect to see a number of #Chicago-area high schools return to in-person learning as early as next week. #IHSA
