Agree. Recruitment needs to be more transparent and merit based. I always say 'wrong people in the wrong place is a recipe for inefficiency' #IPSSOE

#IPSSOE Youth are mis-guided by politicians and the state recruitment system needs to be revived radically. It's disheartening to see the #yahapalanaya govt continued the same trend of the previous corrupt govt on state recruitment. Most of the graduates are jobless in their jobs

#lka state mechanisms need to be digitized. Fear of digitization exists among corrupt politicians and professionals. Lack of minimum standards for increasing effectiveness often the case in many state institutions. A GN division has a minimum of 5 govt officers for what? #IPSSOE

#IPSSOE #lka is also threatened by #CKDu #trafficaccidents #airpollution #wastedisposal in addition to natural disasters. The consistent death rates due to the above could have surpassed the loss due to 3 decades of war and natural disasters. Many new challenges yet to be seen.

@manojin911 @SunimaleeM @TalkEconomicsSL Agreed. #IPSSOE . So where the problem lies for less engagement of women. It seems to me 80% participation to 20% engagement. does it mean the participation of women do not produce engagement? Conducive environment is critical for increasing women engagement, which we still lack.

I agree @sooriyamudali . The system needs to be improved. There are many CBO based initiatives to help poor and marginalised communities. But they lack integration and coordination with the state mechanisms to avoid duplication and increase aid effectiveness. #IPSSOE

@aslamsajaam The selection criteria & targeting of the Samurdhi programme definitely needs to be revamped. But, the programme itself has a lot of potential as it provides cash assistance, insurance benefits plus livelihood development assistance. #IPSSOE

As Dr. Gunatilake also mentioned, since #SriLanka no longer has the advantages of #naturalresources & cheap #labour; we need a highly educated and skilled labour force to compete with more advanced economies. We are still far behind in this respect. #IPSSOE

What are some of the biggest #policy constraints that are holding back #LKA’s economic growth? Can we become an upper middle-income country as expected? We would like to hear from all our panellists as well as the audience.

1/2 #IPSSOE well right now it is the political uncertainty. No one wants to invest in a country whose economic goals are unclear. The country cannot have clear goals until the current political crisis is over. #LKA

#IPSSOE @sooriyamudali . Samurdi system is not effective anymore. In a DSD I know of, many who aren't eligible still in beneficiary list. The strong targeted intervention of most poor need to be devised and the money spent on those in-eligible could be well spent on those poor.

#SocialProtection is a key component in battling #inequality. We would like to hear from Research Officer @sooriyamudali who has done research on this. What are some of the key steps taken by government in this regard? #IPSSOE

#IPSSOE #LKA needs to pay attention to many medium to long term policy reforms. Let's start with having stable governments. So we can concentrate on the real issues.

Any final thoughts on the #IPSSOE the panellists would like to share before we wrap up our discussion?

@TalkEconomicsSL Hi, perhaps you could start by quickly outlining what you collectively think are top 3 policy challenges for SL, say one immediate, one over next two to three years, one 5-10 years - kind of an 'elevator pitch' for the report #IPSSOE

#IPSSOE very true. We have little public resources. These need to be spent more effectively.

@TalkEconomicsSL 3/3 Also, public #investments have been focused more on inefficient subsidies at the cost of more productive #investments in R&D, #technology and #innovations. #IPSSOE

#IPSSOE yes. Also more FDI could bring in much needed technology to the country.

@TalkEconomicsSL 2/3 In addition, the value added production has remained highly concentrated among #apparel, #food products and #rubber products and other labour intensive industries producing goods of low technological intensity. #IPSSOE

1/2 Good question. #IPSSOE many #LKA governments have tried to create jobs in rural areas (e.g., 200 garment factory prog). But these have failed. This is partly due to infrastructure and human resource gaps in rural areas.
