The reaction to #KYStateU story confirms what many of us have been saying for years.
President Dr. Koffi Akakpo has acknowledged a difficult reality: Kentucky State University could not continue on its previous trajectory. The institution required fundamental reform to remain viable, and that’s precisely why the Kentucky General Assembly acted.
I’ve heard the objections from students, faculty, and alumni. I respect their passion for KSU’s history, but history alone does not entitle any public institution to perpetual taxpayer support. Which seems to be the current (and KSU lawsuit hope for) course.
Lets’s be clear: No student has a right to a particular university. No public university has a right to exist forever. And being Kentucky’s public HBCU does not exempt #KSU from the same standards of accountability and financial stewardship that apply to every other public institution-especially a university with over 60% non-Kentuckian student population.
The Kentucky General Assembly has gone above and beyond to save KSU. Lawmakers have provided repeated financial support, governance reforms, and opportunities for the institution to right the ship.
#KYGA extended far more assistance than was ever available to institutions like St. Catharine College, which ultimately closed its doors. At some point, accountability has to replace endless rescue efforts.
I’m reminded of the exchange between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher over South Africa. Thatcher warned that sanctions could leave the country impoverished and ruled by a dictatorship. The Queen reportedly replied, “At least it will be theirs.” Whether apocryphal or not, the principle is straightforward: people are free to choose their own course-even when others believe it is the wrong one.
Kentucky law recognizes shared governance. If the faculty, students, and alumni reject the reforms they believe are necessary, then the General Assembly should respect that choice, but it should also stop asking Kentucky taxpayers to finance it.
No more bailouts no more taxpayer dollars. If @KyStateU alumni and supporters believe they have a better path forward, let them organize, raise the capital, and pursue a privatized future. If they cannot, then we should have the courage to admit what many refuse to say out loud:
Public Postsecondary institutions do not have a right to exist. They earn the privilege of continuing by fulfilling their mission and maintaining the public’s trust.
You can lead the #breds to water, but you can’t make them drink. Let’s listen to their students, faculty and alumni.
