I'd take the opposite view to #Keating's in this piece in the @australian on #Trump's #nss2025 , particularly in relation to Trump's approach to Europe and #NATO. It's now painfully clear to all that Trump is seeking to appease #Putin, in the same way that Chamberlain appeased Hitler in 1938. History shows what happened, and history now rhymes.
A peace plan for #Ukraine imposed by Washington that forces capitulation to #Russia will feed Putin's territorial ambitions for further territory inside Ukraine, and also embolden Putin to be more aggressive in challenging NATO. Russia is already waging a hybrid war against NATO now, and the key questions facing Europe is when that hybrid war will actually turn kinetic. Its now clear that the US won't be there for Europe, if it does, and that too will embolden Putin to move more aggressively. Putin wants to dictate the terms of NATO's capitulation in eastern and central Europe, and ultimately, end NATO. Trump's approach would assist Putin in that endeavour.
So, I'd expect an aggressive Russian move against NATO's eastern frontier - probably the #Baltics, or potentially #Romania or #Poland - within this decade. The Trump #NSS nominates 2027 as a date whereby the US will begin to withdraw from its commitments. That gives Putin time to re-build and re-group after an imposed peace deal on Ukraine, favouring Russia.
2027 is also the year that #China's #Xi Jinping has nominated that the #PLA be ready for an invasion of #Taiwan. Its increasingly clear that China, Russia and #NorthKorea , as well as #Iran, are aligning and coordinating their actions against Western liberal democracies. So a Russian move against NATO in 2027, or soon after, could see a Chinese move against Taiwan around the same time, and potentially a North Korean action on the peninsula.
The Trump National Security Strategy talks of 'deterring China' but at the same time, focuses on the western hemisphere and a 'Trump Corollary' to the Monroe Doctrine. Trump's focus is trade not defence. He thinks he can manage international security through 'doing deals' with a focus on trade. He's heading to Beijing in April 2026, and there is already concern that the CCP may present him with a 'sweet deal' on trade in return for the US walking away from Taiwan, and de-emphasising security commitments to Indo-pacific allies. Trump's limited support for Japan's PM #Takaichi as China ramps up tension with Tokyo, laying the basis for a claim to the #Ryukuyus and #Okinawa, and with Chinese fighter jets locking on to Japanese fighters in international airspace, is worrying.
I think we are heading into much more dangerous times, akin to the late 1930s in many respects, and whilst the key actors are different, and the technology has certainly moved on, the mistakes being made are the same. We have failed to learn from history, and as with the 'America First' movement of the 1930s, that advocated accomodating Nazi Germany and abandoning Europe, I see disturbing parallels now.
