After media personality Raghida Dergham committed a number of violations while building her private villa in #KfarAbida, she is now acting as though she has absolute authority over everything surrounding her property. She prevented a local fisherman from accessing a rock along the shore that he had frequented long before she ever arrived in the town.
Notably, Dergham called the Internal Security Forces despite the fact that the law is on the fisherman’s side, guarantees his right to free access to the coast, and requires the preservation of the shoreline’s continuity when building on plots adjacent to public coastal property.
Yet the veteran journalist chose to ignore this, expanding her garden and private pool into the public zones and planting thorny vegetation to prevent people from passing.
The association NAHNOO called on the Ministry of Public Works and the relevant authorities to immediately remove Dergham’s violations, fine her and enforce the law, stating that she “did not stop at encroaching on the beach, but has gone so far as to abuse people.”
In an act described as a “cultural crime,” a property owner in #KfarAbida deliberately and premeditatively destroyed a well-known archaeological site over 5,000 years old. The owner claimed to have a permit from the former municipality and a letter from the former Minister of Culture, Mohamed Murtada; however, neither document included approval from the General Directorate of Antiquities. The permit and letter clearly prohibit excavation or leveling without a Ministry of Culture or Directorate of Antiquities representative present—a requirement that was ignored.
The municipality responded immediately after local activists reported the incident. In coordination with the General Directorate of Antiquities and the Internal Security Forces, work was halted, the bulldozer was confiscated and a request was made to refer those responsible to the judiciary. The team that had previously worked on the mound arrived to assess the damage, led by Hermann Genz, who is seen in the video inspecting the site.
The mound is part of a Bronze Age village that was accidentally discovered by an archaeology student between 2004 and 2005. A specialized team from the American University of Beirut then excavated the site over the course of 18 years. Research revealed that the site had been inhabited since 2700 BCE. Today, the site has been destroyed by a single bulldozer and sheer greed.

A beachgoer at #Fadous in #KfarAbida documented the illegal iron gate blocking the entryway to the public beach, which used to be accessed via a path between two properties before the gate was installed over the past 2 weeks. The other entry point to the beach was also closed, making it impossible to access.
Notably, one of the beachfront houses close to the gate is now listed on Airbnb with a note that guests can obtain a key to the gate for beach access, suggesting that the beachfront area has become privatized.
The @NahnooLeb NGO issued a statement on Monday in response to what Raghida Dergham's lawyer said a week ago about her construction site in #KfarAbida and the illegally constructed private villa, as well as her framing the recent protest against the encroachments as "incitement to violence" against her.
NAHNOO detailed the violations and encroachments committed by Dergham in 15 points, from the site’s location to the continuation of works despite the Kfar Abida Municipality and the Ministry of Public Works issuing orders to halt them.
Dergham's lawyer had issued a statement on June 19, saying that she intends to file a lawsuit against NAHNOO founder Mohammad Ayoub, Clara Khoury, founder of the Save Kfarabida initiative, Megaphone news, and anyone cooperating with these three parties, due to their participation in or coverage of the June 9 civil protest in front of the encroaching site.
Dergham's lawyer concluded the statement by reminding everyone that she is "an international Lebanese icon" and that she "returned to her homeland out of love and a desire to spend the rest of her life in her country, where she chose the village of Kfar Abida with God’s guidance and blessing." He declared that it was time for "the parasitic few to stop harassing her and put an end to their greed and spiteful envy."

Residents of #KfarAbida, along with several environmental and human rights #activists, held a sit-in outside media personality #RaghidaDergham's illegally constructed villa. They protested the continued construction and the concerned authorities’ complicity. Demonstrators were surprised to find that Dergham had planted several cactus and palm saplings around the villa to obstruct free access to the beach. They removed the plants and said this was a "first warning against such audacity."
Protests against the project have been ongoing since last summer, as Dergham keeps disregarding the opinion of the local community, beachgoers, #publicproperty and Lebanese law.
All encroaching construction on #AbuAliBeach in #KfarAbida will be removed within a month, according to a decision issued on Thursday at the end of a meeting between the Ministry of Works, the General Directorate of Land and Maritime Transport, local representatives and organizations that fought the infringement.
The “Save Abu Ali Beach” campaign was launched a few weeks earlier, when an investor blocked the road to the beach, and added obstacles in its vicinity. The campaign first called for stopping the expansion, and when it succeeded, it also demanded the removal of existing infringements, namely a small private structure.
The Ministry of Works’ victory for public maritime property is an exception. Previously, it had been unsuccessful, or unwilling to issue similar decisions regarding “politically backed” infringing construction. Neither did it object to sanctioning encroachments on the Lebanese coast instead of removing them, in exchange for a negligible fines that pale in comparison with the profits reaped by investors.
