🚨A severe crisis is facing up to 380 detainees held at the #Mogadishu Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D) detention facility located at #km4 area in the #Somali capital. Three inmates and an officer - all who spoke to us with anonymity - have told inmates including individuals who have not been formally charged and are being held for an indefinite period. Even though the law permits upto 48 hours before a person is charged, there are inmates held upto six months with no single charge against them. Majority of the detainees belong to poorer families and marginalized clans in #Mogadishu, including youth and women. The most critical challenges reported are lack of food and access to clean water. Over the past week alone, at least 11 detainees were transferred to hospital after developing kidney-related illnesses and infections. An officer (name withheld) says this is due to the shortage of clean water. Three detainees told us that they were asked to pay money demanded by senior investigation officers in exchange for their release, a request they said they were unable to meet. Additionally, food and water brought by family members are reportedly subject to a $5 payment each time they are delivered, a cost many families cannot afford. As a result, detainees have been left without food. A C.I.D officer working at the facility confirmed to us that the detention center has exceeded its maximum capacity, forcing them to transfer some detainees to another prison located at #Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport.
