During my career in special operations, I gathered information from a variety of sources, including foreign government and military leaders, and most notably terrorist leader on the battlefield, or in detention facility post capture to help understand an enemy's capabilities, intentions, and vulnerabilities. Post service I used these skills to assess what intervention or rehabilitation is required for a variety of domestic terrorist and violent extremists. Over my +20 year career, I have interviewed the full spectrum of terrorist from #ISIS leaders to #Taliban bomb makers and even a 16 year old #Al_Qaeda (very successful) recruiter. One thing is very clear, no two terrorist or violent extremists share the same journey, motivation, or level of conviction, which is why no pure acedemic or politician will ever understand the space.
