⭕️ When a Bullet Is the Answer to Bread
A video received by Kolbarnews shows two young #Kolbars carrying heavy loads as they hurriedly descend a mountainside. At that very moment, border forces of the criminal Islamic Republic regime open fire on them.
These two young men are carrying no weapons and pose no threat to anyone; they are simply risking their lives to provide for the most basic necessities of #survival.
#Kolbari is not a profession; it is a phenomenon born from a class-based society and a corrupt government founded on religious #capitalism. It is not a choice, but a necessity imposed by life under a system built on corruption, discrimination, the degradation of #human dignity, and the denial of people's most basic economic rights. In such a system, people are forced every day to choose between hunger and bullets simply to stay alive.
A government that has, for years, imposed poverty and unemployment on Kurdistan through anti-human policies has, instead of creating opportunities for dignified work and life, turned the border into a zone of pursuit and #gunfire. Every bullet fired at a kolbar targets not only a human life, but also stands as evidence of the structural failure of a system whose survival depends on deprivation, repression, and the devaluation of human life.
These images are not merely the story of two Kolbars; they tell the story of thousands of people who are victims of an order that forces them into the mountains, and into the line of fire, simply to earn a piece of bread.
As long as #poverty, #discrimination and #repression persist, Kolbari will remain not a profession, but a stark symbol of injustice and human exploitation.

❗️Kolbarnews Exclusive Report; Overview of Kolbari Incidents in the First Half of 2026
The first half of 2026 was marked by increasingly difficult conditions for #Kolbars and their families, as the border regions became more heavily securitized following the consequences of the recent war. The intensified presence of military forces, increased border controls, and restrictions on the routes upon which the livelihoods of thousands of families depend not only made access to income-generating routes more difficult for Kolbars, but also increased the risks to their lives. In such circumstances, in addition to the economic pressure caused by the loss or restriction of income sources, Kolbars continued to face the dangers of direct shootings, arrests, and other forms of human rights violations.
A review of the incidents documented by Kolbarnews during the first six months of 2026 shows that at least 6 Kurdish Kolbars and tradesmen were injured and 2 Kolbars/tradesmen lost their lives, 6 of these cases resulting from direct shootings by the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the border regions and intercity roads of Kurdistan. In addition, reports were published concerning the torture and allegations of sexual assault against two Kurdish Kolbars while in the custody of Turkish security forces, constituting some of the most serious human rights violations against Kolbars during this period.

❗️Kolbar casualties in 2025; 70 Kolbars killed and injured 76% due to direct gunfire by military forces
According to statistics recorded by Kolbarnews, in the year 2025, a total of 70 #Kolbars in border areas and intercity routes of West #Azerbaijan, #Kurdistan, #Kermanshah, and beyond were killed or injured due to factors such as direct #gunfire by the regime’s military forces, #avalanches and freezing, traffic accidents, and other causes.
• Of this total, 32 kolbars (46%) were killed and 38 kolbars (54%) were injured.
• Of the 70 kolbars killed or injured in 2025, a total of 53 cases (76%) were the result of direct gunfire by military forces.
• Of the 70 kolbars killed or injured in 2025, a total of 3 kolbars (4%) were child kolbars under the age of 18; in one of these cases, the child kolbar was killed as a result of direct gunfire by Iraqi border forces (Haras al-Hudud).
• This data also includes one Baluch kolbar who suffered severe injuries after being set on fire by security forces.
Despite an 80% decrease in the total number of killed and injured kolbars in 2025 compared to 2024, the proportion of deaths out of total casualties increased from 17% to 46%. This change indicates a significant increase in the share of fatalities among total casualties and reflects the deadlier nature of incidents in 2025.
Including the figures for 2025, over the past seven years (2019 to 2025), a total of 1,686 kolbars have been killed or injured; of these, 1,319 individuals (78%) were injured and 367 individuals (22%) lost their lives. Additionally, of the total cases, 1,280 incidents (76%) occurred as a result of direct gunfire by military forces.

❗️Identification of the second Kolbar killed due to an avalanche
According to Kolbarnews, on Friday night, December 26, 2025, following an #avalanche in the border areas of “Miraveh,” a district of #Sardasht County, a group of #Kolbars were caught in the incident.
Based on reports, four Kolbars were trapped in the snow in this incident, two of whom lost their lives and two others were injured.
The identity of the second deceased #Kolbar has been announced as #Khosrow_Hamzeh_Pour, from the village of “Doleh-Garm,” a district of Sardasht County.
Previously, the identity of the other deceased Kolbar, #Kamal_Khezeri, from #Piranshahr County, married and the father of three children, had been published by Kolbarnews.

❗️Several Kolbars killed and injured following an avalanche
According to Kolbarnews, on Friday night, December 26, 2025, as a result of an #avalanche in the border areas of “Miraveh,” in #Sardasht County, a number of #Kolbars were involved in an incident.
Based on this report, five Kolbars were trapped in the incident, one person lost his life, three other Kolbars were #injured, and one #Kolbar is still missing.
The identity of the deceased Kolbar has been confirmed by Kolbarnews as #Kamal_Khezeri, from #Piranshahr County, married and the father of three #children.
The physical condition of one of the injured Kolbars has been reported as critical, and two others are receiving treatment.
Search operations to find the Kolbar who is still missing are ongoing.

Iran’s regime’s deadly clampdown on #Kolbars continues; The Islamic Republic’s border forces on Friday, Oct 24, opened fire on a vehicle carrying kolbars in the “Kani Seif” border region of Baneh, in Kurdistan of #Iran, killing the car’s driver, a 32-y/o father of two named Ebrahim Piranzad, and severely injuring a kolbar identified as Shaho. The vehicle was not carrying any “foreign goods” and was targeted at close range, without prior warning, KHRN reports. The incident sparked a protest by the killed victim’s relatives, who gathered outside the governor’s office in Baneh with his body, but their protest gathering was put to an end by plainclothes and police forces, KHRN adds.

❗️37 Kolbars Killed and Injured in the First Six Months of 1404; Exclusive Report by Kolbarnews
According to statistics recorded by Kolbarnews, in the first half of 1404 (Iranian calendar), a total of 37 #Kolbars were killed or injured in the border regions and inter-road routes of #West_Azerbaijan, #Kurdistan, #Kermanshah, and other provinces, due to factors such as direct fire by regime military forces, landmine explosions, avalanches and frostbite, traffic accidents, and other incidents.
▪️ Out of this total, 17 kolbars (46%) were killed and 20 kolbars (54%) were injured.
▪️ Of the 37 kolbars killed or injured in the first half of 2025, 32 cases (86%) were the result of direct fire by military forces.
▪️ Among these 37 kolbars, one (3%) was a #child_kolbar under the age of 18, who was killed by direct fire from #Iraqi border guards (Haras al-Hudud).
▪️ Despite a 74% decrease in the total number of deaths and injuries in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, the proportion of deaths to total casualties increased from 25% to 46%. According to the recorded data, in the first half of 2025, a total of 30 #Kolbars in the border regions and intercity routes of West #Azerbaijan, #Kurdistan, and #Kermanshah provinces have been killed or injured due to various factors, including direct military #gunfire, #avalanches and #frostbite, stepping on #landmines, falling from #mountains and heights, and other causes.
• Out of this total, 14 Kolbars (47%) were killed, while 16 Kolbars (53%) were injured.
• 22 cases (73%) of the total 30 Kolbars killed or injured in the first half of 2025, resulted from direct gunfire by regime military forces.
• 2 Kolbars (7%) of the total 30 cases were #child_Kolbars under 18 years old, with one case involved direct shooting by Iraqi border forces (Haras al-Hudud), which resulted in the death of the child Kolbar.
• Despite an (89%) decrease in the total number of killed and injured on the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, the proportion of deaths to total casualties increased from (13%) to (47%). ❗️A Kurdish Kolbar Killed by Military Forces' Gunfire
According to Kolbarnews, on the morning of Saturday, May 10, 2025, #military forces of the #Islamic Republic of Iran opened fire on a group of #Kurdish #Kolbars in the "Doplure" border region of Marivan County.
As a result, a #Kolbar named #Arman_Alizadeh, 24 years old, married and father of two children, from the village of Gurjeh near #Marivan, was shot and killed.

I’m baffled by the ‘Jury Comment’ on Alipoor’s project Bullets Have No Border, which highlights the precarious lives of Kurdish #Kolbars (‘illegal’ cross-border porters). It states that “this project … provides a rare and deeply nuanced perspective on the complex impacts of economic sanctions.” This is, at best, misleading.
While American/Western economic sanctions have undoubtedly affected Iran—and, by extension, Kurdistan (part of Iran)—the plight of Kurdish Kolbars and their routine targeting by Iranian border guards is a deliberate, systematic, and racist anti-Kurdish policy.
Kurdish Kolbars are forced into kolbari, risking their lives on every journey, due to the militarization of Kurdistan, the planned underdevelopment of the region, and state-led, legalized discrimination.
It is unfortunate that the jury fails to recognize the specific context of Alipoor’s engaged art and the distinctly Kurdish humanitarian message his brilliant photos convey.
