Thoughts on #Kubera, which for all its intentions, didn’t work at all for me:
In Kubera, this idea of a corrupt corporation exploiting even a beggar seems interesting enough on paper. Yes, it’s a bit of a stretch that these individuals are plucked off the streets—but you know what, I was willing to buy into it, if it meant the narrative would eventually uncover great truths or quiet joys. I tried to yield to the film—I swear I did—but the problem with the film is how those decent ideas on paper keep playing out in frustratingly over-the-top, repetitive ways.
Take one of the many Deva (Dhanush) flashback moments. His mother is introduced—and before we’ve even processed what’s going on, she’s run over by a car. That’s it. Or look at the film’s idea of a ruthless, realistic kill: a villain dramatically cutting his own arm to attract… sharks. Yes, sharks. Yes, maybe the villains are all sharks too, feeding on the blood of the poor—but it still doesn't make this moment itself any better.
The henchman really hams it up too—and he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed either. At one point, he’s got a gun pointed at Deva, but then, he receives a call, casually drops the gun, turns around, walks away, and is shocked to find that Deva has run away when he returns. I mean… Meanwhile, his boss, Neeraj, is mostly about threats and screams.
The four beggars in the story are mostly just making up the numbers. Symbolically, they may be representing different parts of the country—different languages, different spaces—but in truth, they don’t matter very much. Two are easily dispensed with. The only woman in the group, as you’d expect, is pregnant and conveniently on the verge of delivery, presumably to squeeze sympathy. To further run home this objective, there's the visual of a pregnant belly scraping against a wall edge. And of course, because no film can resist the temptation, she does go into labour during a crucial fight sequence. Naturally.
But take nothing away from Dhanush. The man submits himself wholly to the role—and you see it in several small, affecting moments: the first time he smells perfume, when he flips a switch, when he refuses money from Neeraj (Jim) because something feels off. You see it in the way he plays uncertainty, in his body language, his use of his left hand, and even in the way he dances in that jarringly placed song towards the end. I could go on.
At over three hours, Kubera absolutely suffers to maintain momentum. Yes, Deva is on the run. Yes, Deepak (Nagarjuna) is searching for him. Yes, Neeraj keeps yelling at Deepak. Yes, Deva and Sameera (Rashmika) keep bumping into each other. It isn’t just Sameera who’s tired of this—the repetition of events and dialogue began to wear me down too. Deepak seems like he could’ve been an interesting character—a man fallen from grace—but the film never quite invites us to feel anything for him. We don’t emotionally know anyone in this world.
This is a story about how even beggars are not beyond exploitation in a cold, money-driven world. But somewhere along the way, I found myself wondering—does the film itself not do the same? Round up some beggars, throw some to the sharks, kill one off during pregnancy, scar another for life… all without ever truly building emotional investment. Some films do a lot for their actors. And then, there are the others. Where actors like Dhanush do a lot, but don't quite see the favour being repaid.

This man is unreal. Each and every expression was right straight from the textbook. That innocence, those expressive eyes, that walk, that running, what not, every minute detail was top notch. I now can confidently say this man is "KUBERA OF ACTING"
