π Babel's word of the day - VIRGULE π
You may not have heard of it / but / we reckon / you will probably recognise it

<SINISTER>, in its original meaning, means "left side"? No more, no less.
The word for "stupid" is <NICE>.
Because, as we all know, words never ever evolve in meaning or usageβespecially not 7 or more times, like so:
What ho! In Babel No7, we didst ask: Early Modern English, what art thou? https://t.co/h0fBdLvzGV
I had a spare moment, so here's a diagram to show how the word 'husband' is related to the word 'bondage'.
#LangChange (sort of). Feels like it should be a joke but very helpful for looking at #Identity, #Discourse of patriotism and, weirdly, #CLA
It's interesting to see what children were being taught when Britain was the dominant world power. What were the lessons that made us great?

Amazing Barclays ad in the school magazine when I was a pupil in the 70s. Thanks @paulbamfordfc for sharing. "If you're a girl who has a good general education but just wants an interesting job until she gets married, don't let all this talk of careers worry you."
Someone pointed out that I've made a bunch of language change memes so here's a handful to use as you see fit.

:-) The smiley emoticon - a colon, a dash and a right-hand bracket all lined up - was first used in 1982.

Great text for #LangChange
19th century advertisement for Savarβs Coca (cocaine) Wine. Coca wine was a very popular pick-me-up. Another famous brand was Vin Mariani, which was endorsed by royalty & all kinds of celebrities. Pope Leo appeared on a poster endorsing the wine & awarded it a Vatican gold medal
