#LanguageIsolate A 'language isolate' is a language that has no known genetic relationship with any other languages. It forms its own language family. Examples are: Basque - The 'Basque country' extends over Northern Spain and southern France. It is nestled in the western Pyrenees. In fact, the origin of the Basque people, the place they came from into SW Europe is considered a mystery. Differing theories state it is North Africa, the Caucasus or that they are remnants of the native people of Europe in the Paleolithic Age. The endonym for Basque is Euskara. Bilbao, Guernica, Navarre and Bayonne have sizeable Basque populations. Eminent personalities: Ignatius of Loyola and Francis of Xavier, the founder and the most famous missionary of the Jesuit order, resp. Size: Just over 1 million speakers.
