Thank you at #leadsped for such a great conversation last week. In my book releasing today, I discuss differentiating instruction, online IEP meetings, and case managing in a couple of chapters. Check it out today. Link in bio! #sped #specialeducation #onlinelearning #edutwitter
@Hahne_Elyse It broke my heart when I made my first positive phone calls home and the parents asked “What did he do now?” before I even had time to share the good news. Some families are so use to only hearing from teachers for negative reasons. This is not okay! #leadsped
@MsAndreaBoydOPS Agreed. I have so many emails and logs from communication all year. It’s really necessary. #leadsped
@MsAndreaBoydOPS @Hahne_Elyse I use Google Voice to text message now. It has made my life so much easier in regard to communicating with parents! #leadsped
@Hahne_Elyse I agree and would add that the IEP meeting should not be the only time you communicate with parents during the year. I know our caseloads can be large, but frequent communication is everything! Send a postcard, 2 minute phone call to check in, or a quick text/email. #leadsped
A6 It’s not us versus families. Keeping lines of communication open and often can help. #leadsped
@MattRhoads1990 I agree! Tips for facilitators: check for understanding throughout the meeting often. Limit the use of educational jargon and make sure that you explain the information in terms people without an education degree can understand #leadsped
A6 An IEP meeting sets the framework for the year and informal meetings and reviews can happen throughout the year. If it’s a teacher meeting with parents, Sped and gen ed need to be involved. #leadsped
A6 My tips to all stakeholders who are involved in IEP meetings is to listen, be open to collaboration, have patience, understand its a process, know that we are a team, and ASK questions before or during the meeting. #leadsped
@MsAndreaBoydOPS One major area schools can improve in is providing parents with students with disabilities opportunities to learn more about the IEP process and how students are supported in their education. #leadsped
A5a - If the meeting gets too escalated, we have rescheduled the meeting to let all stakeholders take some time to process what's going on so we can come back to the table. #leadsped
A5 When a parent or someone gets upset a meeting, I tend to at first to just listen and not say much. Then, I affirm we are here for the child and do not have any hidden agendas. If the meeting needs a break, we can take a 5 minute break. #leadsped
A5 Listen and ask clarifying questions. Empathize and listen. If needed, table and come back once parties have a chance to regroup. #leadsped
A4 Collaboration starts before the first day and continues throughout the year. I verbally Check-In with all staff a few times a week and then have a form and email that Check-In and ask for feedback. It works for me. #leadsped
A3 A successful meeting is when families, the student, and school share strengths, weaknesses, and needs. Successes from the year are highlighted. Planning is intentional for the next IEP and year. #leadsped
A3 - Successful IEP meetings to me are ensuring as a team a student is in the best position to succeed in addition to having consensus from all parties that this is a good plan forward. Typically, these meetings are an hour and do not drag on either. #leadsped
Hi everyone! Elyse in Texas. I teach K-5 life skills and did about 20+ IEP meetings due to revisions, tabled, and REEDs. Excited to chat #leadsped
