In this day and age, we validate a person who has reached the milestone of a new year by throwing water on them (kauwai) as a mark of their voyage and providing vamamaca to let them know that they’re safe and will be made ready for the journey of the coming year.

To remedy this, I normally ask anyone who calls me tauvu why they call me that. If nothing specific can be said like names and relationships, then go with "Turaga" or "Adi". That way you set firm boundaries around what could be a new relationship

...was told that the Christian ritual was similar to a Fijian one where water was used to show a renewal of relationship, forgiveness of past wrongs and a looking forward to a new year (harvest).
Hence why the ritual requires water and vakamamaca.
