Maybe coz indigenous Fijians didn't choose to be called itaukei, theres a thought. No democratic process, no consultation, no permission, just another set of neo-colonial powers giving us a name we don't even call ourselves in our own language at the height of a dictatorship. OK great, let's wrestle the name Fijian away from the indigenous Fijians and call ourselves all Fijian, but wtf is itaukei and where did that come from? 🤣🤣🤣 Don't hide the erasure of an indigenous identity known the world over to be our name and how indigenous Fijians have been identified for centuries now behind some so called call for unity coz you'd be doing exactly what the colonialists did back then, slapped a label on us and expect us to just sing kumbaya and go with it because you know better than the poor dumb indigenous people of the country you now live in and call home. I would rather you all call on a democratic process to determine the name we would like to be identified as as an indigenous group rather than belittling our confusion and non-cooperation as to how itaukei, which is just a word like kateni means carton, could possibly be the right word to name us. Its like me pulling out your birth certificate and telling you, sorry, your parent named you Leanne, you'd be better off known as Wood, and no, what you call yourself and what everyone know you as is irrelevant, start calling yourself Wood please. See the difference? I doubt you'd not be fixated with a change in your name. So, I dont understand the fixation where non-indigenous people want indigenous people to just accept a name they dont even call themselves and give away a name they have accepted over time without permission? That's even weirder to me. If you want to be called a Fijian, why cant you all respect the people you are taking the name from enough to request permission to use it as your national identity and let them choose their own ethnic name? I mean if we are reversing all colonial constructs, let's reverse eating and clothing habits too while we are at it. Should we also change what Rabians and Rotumans are called, those were names coined by the colonialists? Not everything the colonialists did should be erased. This is one of those things. We were all happy being called Fiji Islanders as a national identity before the last government decided to force a different identity on to us. Just saying, food for thought. Im not mad at it, but Im genuinely surprised ppl don't see the problem with this. What if the next government comes and what's to change our name again, to Retard for all I know, dangerous precedent and fucking dumb

After Christmas, we carry out our carabulubulu. With it come the stories of those whose resting place we cleared — their lives, lessons, and legacy. We share them with the next generation, and in remembering them, they live another lifetime.
