From a butchware4gov volunteer: Voters who don’t vote their principles think that repeatedly supporting the “lesser-evil” buys us time to continue to organize for gradual systemic change in the direction of what the people are asking for, and assumes the lesser-evil choices will continue to get better until eventually we will get all our asks met - that they just have to convince everyone to stay on that lesser-evil track. This strategy assumes power will eventually concede willingly. Voters who vote their principles know that repeatedly supporting the lesser-evil teaches power that it never has to meet the people’s demands. It only has to make the alternative terrifying enough. Over time, the “lesser evil” options move further right and become more corrupt, while lesser-evil voters trap themselves into repeatedly consenting for the things they are most deeply against (which psychologically fractures and breaks a person and by extension a community). Principled voters understand that power concedes nothing willingly. I believe that principles are the laws of reality, that we cannot break principles, we can only break ourselves against them. Until our political strategy becomes to trust principles and align with them, then we will be broken and have no-one to blame but ourselves.
