Major N J Dutta Singh was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. As a company Commander, he led the battalion's advance east of the road Vasavilan-Uramparai. He vigorously pressed and cleared pockets of resistance, facing heavy and accurate militant fire all through the night of 12 October 1987.
On 13 October 1987, he covered the operation to extricate the Para Commandos and 13 Sikh LI. He, with one platoon, moved to a vantage point. This platoon provided the most crucial fire support, but soon came under an overwhelming attack by the militants.
His position was being continuously attacked and he radioed the Officiating Commanding officer asking for urgent reinforcements and ammunition. Even while this was being organised, he radioed, āI am out of ammunition and am charging through. Goodbye and outā
He brought out his khukri and, with two more men, charged and killed the LTTE militants. Unfortunately, he was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries.

Lt Col Bawa laid down his life fighting the LTTE #OnThisDay 13 October in 1987 in Jaffna
The #IndianBrave led his troops till his last, in aid of 13 SIKH LI & 10 PARA during #OpPawan
Deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the operation of the #IPKF, Lt Col Bawa landed with his battalion 4/5 Gorkha Rifles (FF) at Palai on 11 October 1987 and went immediately into battle with the task of clearing the Axis Vasavilan-Urgmpurai-Jaffna Fort.
The militants desperately contested the advance from strong fortified positions. Lt Col Bawa contained, bypassed and reduced each position, inflicting heavy casualties on the militants. He personally led his command and was a sustained inspiration to his men.
The battalion was again detailed to extricate 13 Sikh LI and 10 Para Commando teams from the Kondavil North area. Lt Col Bawa again led 4/5 #GorkhaRifles (FF) through heavily fortified territory, linked up with the above force, and successfully extricated them on 13 October 1987
During this effort, a militant suicide squad sprayed him with a hail of bullets, and the #IndianBrave laid down his life fighting gallantly. Lt Col displayed conspicuous bravery and vital leadership in the face of frenzied militants.
#LestWeForgetIndiaš®š³ Lieutenant Colonel Inder Bal Singh Bawa was awarded the #MahaVirChakra posthumously.
His wife Mrs Lily Bawa @LilyBawa received the award from then President.

Nk Singh held out against an attack by 500 Chinese troops on a platoon of Indian soldiers before making the supreme sacrifice, in Tsenjong, NEFA, #OnThisDay 10 October in 1962
On 09 October 1962. Nk Singh was sent with the Test of his platoon from Tsangle to reinforce the platoon position at Tseng-jong, north of Namkha chu river in NEFA
Early next morning, approximately 500 Chinese concentrated in the vicinity of this post and started shelling it with gun and mortars.
Although greatly outnumbered and with a limited quantity of ammunition, Nk Singh and his men inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
The Chinese then launched a more determined assault on this post from all sides; but Nk Singh and his men held on and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
When he had nearly run out of ammunition, he was ordered to withdraw his section. Ordering his rifle group to withdraw, he took over the light machine gun to give covering fire to the rest of his section but was hit by a burst of enemy machine gun fire.
Although seriously wounded, he kept on manning the light machine gun to facilitate the withdrawal of his section. He was again hit by an enemy machine gun burst in the head and fell on the spot.
It was due to the exceptional courage and leadership of Naik Chain Singh that his section could inflict heavy casualties on the attacking Chinese troops and withdraw.
