I am deeply grateful to inform that authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have kindly granted our request to postpone the impending execution of Stephen Munyakho (now known as Abdulkareem), to allow for further negotiations between all parties. Stephen was due to be executed on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. As we devise strategies to bring this matter to a more acceptable conclusion, and thereby giving both families the closure they so urgently need and deserve, we shall continue to lean on the warm and solid friendship that we have with our Saudi partners, as well as on the goodwill of all Kenyans. In the coming days, we shall be engaging stakeholders in Nairobi and Riyadh, including representations from our religious leadership, to agree on the next urgent steps. As we stand & sympathize with Dorothy Kweyu on the predicament facing her son in Saudi Arabia, I wish to share her work, published in the Sunday Nation in 1981, during my time as an elected Branch Secretary of the then Union of Post and Telecommunications Employees. Dorothy interviewed and published my sentiments on 22, November, 1981, taking in mind the fact that immediately after my election as a Branch Secretary I resolved to fight for women workers. It’s laughable to imagine that, today, some of them are calling me names. But, being a believer in social justice, I will continue fighting for them until we have total freedom for our female workers. As a person and a leader in the Labour Movement, I am proud of the work that we did in the formulation of ILO Convention 190 and we shall continue calling for not only its ratification across our continent, but also its implementation so that we promote safe working spaces for female employees. To my sister Dorothy, we salute your great works and we shall stand with you and support you during this trying period.
