Don't worry! This buckled book's cover will soon be replaced in our Conservation Lab. Until then, give us your best guess as to what attacked this book. Conservation Specialist, Sara White, will let you know who came closest! #bookconservation #libraryconservation #bookbinding

This is an Adaptable Conservation Book Support (ACBS) created by KSL preservation officer, Andrew! ACBSs provide support for books that need to be held open during treatment or digitization. #CWRU #LibraryConservation #KSL

Loving 'the secret history of writing' right now @bbc4. The influence of materials on literacy is well discussed comparing Roman use of papyrus and medieval parchment. There's a lovely clip on parchment making on webpage https://t.co/ye1ivpOUyq #librarylife #libraryconservation
Sewing frames prove invaluable for keeping the tension even over many cords and help make aligning the signatures easier and faster. Here, you can see how Sabrena Johnson, Conservation Librarian, resews LE VOYAGEUR FRANCOIS. #bookconservation #libraryconservation #bookbinding

Watermarks were used to identify the paper mill, date, or place paper was made. Although this watermark says 1399, the sheet of paper was likely made in the 20th century at Hayle Mill, England's last large-scale manufacturer of handmade paper. #libraryconservation #rarebooks

Here's a sneak peak of one of the books featured in our upcoming "Books Through Their Pages" online exhibit! In this early 19th century edition of Ovid's (Les) métamorphoses, the marbled endsheets and edges are an example of a "shell" pattern. #rarebooks #libraryconservation

Last week, conservator Sara White constructed a new case for an oversized post binding. The maps are held in mylar sleeves bound with three metal posts, and the binding allows the book to open flat so that researchers can easily view the maps. #libraryconservation #bookbinding

Our conservators are practicing hand binding skills! For centuries, endbands were used for structure and decoration. Today, mass-produced hardcover books often have "stuck on" endbands, serving no structural purpose. More: https://t.co/HS0Wr4LGV3 #libraryconservation #bookbinding
Conservators Sabrena Johnson & Sara White built this model of historic limp bindings using available scrap materials in our conservation lab. The model is sewn on handmade paper tapes, and the endband uses a red leather core and red silk thread. #libraryconservation #bookbinding

Green books are poisonous! 😱 A blue (indigo) and yellow (orpiment) paint mix, found on central European volumes, can be toxic if injested! Don't eat the green book folks.... #librarytwitter #libraryconservation #heritagescience #WednesdayWisdom https://t.co/cNWTyZzajN
