#Bigfin #squids (#Magnapinnidae, #Coleoidea) include only one #genus, namely #Magnapinna and should better be named #longarmed squids. The most important and striking common morphological characters (apomorphy) of the 9 species of this taxon concern the long (tentacles and) #arms, which can reach up to 20 times the size of the mantle and are all uniform in appearance and are additionally extended perpendicular to the body. For a long time, the group was initially only known from its #larvae and #subadults. The first of the rare #video recordings were made in 1988 in Brazil. The interesting taxon has not yet been well researched biologically, but at least #taxonomically and #morphologically. The authors M. Vecchione, R. E. Young (2006) for example summarized the knowledge about that unusual mollusc taxon and even described a new species. The 1st sighting of the rare bigfin squid (Magnapinna) in the Tonga Trench (Southern Pacific Ocean), filmed by researchers from @deepseauwa @KelpieGeo @InkfishExplore at 3,300 meters in Sept 2024. There have been so few sightings, little is known about these alien-like squids.
