#Kerala: #LPST rank holders call off hunger strike after minister seeks 45 days
The indefinite hunger strike by #ValarmathiS, secretary of the All Kerala Lower Primary School Teacher Rank Holders’ Association, was called off on Tuesday after General Education Minister N Samsudheen met the protesting rank holders and sought 45 days to examine their demands.
Valarmathi ended her 13-day fast by drinking water offered by the minister.
The association, however, made it clear that its agitation will continue in a peaceful manner until a favourable decision is taken on their demands.
The minister assured the protesters that the demand for extending the validity of the current Lower Primary School Teacher (LPST) rank list would be examined and expressed hope that a positive decision could be taken within 45 days.
The rank holders have been staging a protest outside the Secretariat for more than a month, seeking appointments from the LPST rank list published by the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) on May 31, 2025.
They have been demanding that the government fill the available vacancies from the existing list without further delay.
The protesters have also raised concerns over the reporting of vacancies, seeking a more transparent system under which schools are required to promptly inform the PSC about vacant teaching posts.
Another major demand is the revision of the teacher-student ratio in government lower primary schools to 1:25.
The rank holders argue that the existing arrangement could lead to a reduction in divisions and, consequently, a loss of teaching posts.
They have also demanded that head teacher vacancies be brought under the PSC recruitment system and opposed direct recruitment by aided school managements. Instead, they have proposed an appointment system in aided schools based on a 1:1 ratio, with one PSC appointment for every management appointment.
The protesters have further sought protection for teaching posts that could be affected by a fall in student divisions. They have demanded that the validity of the present LPST rank list be extended if appointments cannot be completed within its existing period.
The association has also called for the notification of the next LPST rank list to be deferred to an appropriate time so that candidates included in the current list get maximum opportunities for appointment.
The latest development follows a visit to the protest venue on August 4 by S Rajesh, additional private secretary to Minister Samsudheen.
He had handed over an official note from the minister's office requesting the protesters to withdraw their agitation.
According to the minister's office, the government had sought two months to examine the issues when representatives of the association met Samsudheen last week.
The minister has now sought 45 days to consider the demands, particularly the extension of the rank list.
While the hunger strike has ended, the association has decided to continue its peaceful protest, saying there will be no slogans or disruptive demonstrations until a decision is taken.
