The land #snail #Helix #lucorum (#Helicidae, #Stylommatophora) is a #species with a noticeably large shell that is originally distributed in Asia Minor and the Black Sea region. H. lucorum impresses with its particularly decorative #striped snail #shell, whereby the basic color can have different shades depending on environmental conditions or due to genetic variability. The snail species, also known as #Escargot Turk due to its natural distribution in #Turkey, is one of three species of the Helix genus that humans eat as a #delicacy. The other two species are Helix #aspersum and Helix #pomatia. H. lucorum lives in bushes, open forest landscapes and also on cultivated land. The snail species does not remain dormant during the winter in its natural range, but instead spends the hot summer months in dry torpor while buried in the ground. The snail can also be found outside its natural range in regions to which it has been introduced by humans, such as in France and even a limited area in Germany. In such cases one speaks of #neozoa. Unlike H. pomatia and H. aspersum, H. lucorum is a species that is not usually bred as #humanfood, but is collected from the field for these purposes. The author I. Ekin (2023) dealt with the #reproductiveprocesses of the species H. lucorum and Eobania vermiculata and studied them in the field for several years. But here I will only summarize H.ucorum information. According to the researcher, the snail begins to #reproduce at the age of 3-4 years, in a period from October to December. Observations took place in Diyarbakır, SE Turkey. The snails laid 82 ± 12 #eggs that were 5 mm in diameter. The young offspring hatched after 30 ± 4 days. The author assumes that #breedinghabits might vary depending on localities and their climatic conditions. © #StefanFWirth Berlin 2025 Reference: Ekin, İ. (2023).
