FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 17, 2026 Edina, Minnesota THOMAS EVENSTAD CONDEMNS MICHELE TAFOYA, RON SCHULZ, AND LISA DEMUTH FOR DISLOYALTY TO PRESIDENT TRUMP EDINA, MN — Thomas Evenstad, lifelong Edina resident, architect of the Violently Dangerous Persons Act (VDP Act / Mariah’s Law), and continuous candidate for President of the United States since 2016, today issued a clean and direct condemnation of Michele Tafoya, Ron Schulz, and Lisa Demuth for their public disloyalty to President Donald Trump. Evenstad stated that while Trump is being asked to promote these candidates in Minnesota, each has chosen to publicly distance themselves from him or defy his positions when it serves their own political interests. Michele Tafoya’s record of disloyalty includes: Calling a recent Trump post on Somali immigrants “not helpful or appropriate.” Stating that “No president of either party should have a blank check to wage war… That includes President Donald Trump.” Previously writing that Trump’s politics “went from messy to absolute mayhem” and that “it is difficult for me to defend Trump because there is so much about him that is difficult to accept.” Responding to Trump’s endorsement of her with a tepid “I heard about that” while emphasizing distance rather than alignment. Lisa Demuth’s record of disloyalty includes: Declaring “President Trump doesn’t speak for my campaign, and it’s not language I would have used” regarding his comments on Somali immigrants. Stating “President Trump and I are different people” and calling for an end to the war in Iran, saying it is “hurting Minnesotans.” Opposing Trump-backed beef import policy with the words “That is not what is good for our country… That is not what is good for Minnesota.” Staying in the Republican primary and defeating the candidate Trump endorsed. Ron Schulz has likewise offered no public defense of the President’s positions and has aligned with the same pattern of selective distance practiced by Tafoya and Demuth. “These are not minor differences,” Evenstad said. “These are public statements of separation. Tafoya, Schulz, and Demuth take what they need from Trump’s movement when it helps them, then publicly undercut him the moment it becomes convenient. That is disloyalty.” Evenstad noted that none of the three has advanced any serious solution to Minnesota’s sexual-predator emergency or the need for the VDP Act to civilly commit the highest-risk offenders. “Trump is being asked to elevate candidates who have already shown they will distance themselves from him in public,” Evenstad continued. “That is a bad bargain for the President and a worse one for Minnesota families. Demand a meeting with me in Minnesota. Stop elevating the disloyal.” Evenstad again called on Trump’s team to schedule an immediate face-to-face meeting with him in Minnesota on the President’s next visit to the state. As Democrats, we constantly criticize the far-right for their incendiary and discriminatory politics, but we need to hold ourselves to the same standard. Hasan Piker’s rhetoric is polarizing and dangerous, and embracing him as a party is a mistake. I am disappointed that Minnesota DFLers are hosting an event with him here.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 17, 2026 THOMAS EVENSTAD PRAISES RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF BOB FLETCHER, U.S. MARSHAL JAMES STUART, AND MN SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP FOR ENGAGING ON THE VDP ACT — CREDITS THEIR OPENNESS WITH HELPING MOVE SENATOR JIM ABELER TOWARD COLLABORATION Thomas Evenstad today expressed gratitude to Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher, U.S. Marshal James Stuart (Trump appointee), and Brian Peterson of the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association for their willingness to engage on the Violently Dangerous Persons (VDP) Act. Evenstad stated that Sheriff Fletcher’s decision to accept a briefing for himself and his command staff demonstrated the kind of leadership and integrity that has been too rare. He also thanked U.S. Marshal James Stuart and Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association leadership for taking the issue seriously enough to discuss it. Evenstad said these openings have helped create space for Republican State Senator Jim Abeler to begin working with him on advancing the groundbreaking legislation. “The VDP Act expands Minnesota’s proven civil-commitment system for sexually dangerous persons to cover violently dangerous persons,” Evenstad said. “Independent modeling projects a 50–64 percent reduction in overall violence. This is the next revolutionary breakthrough in law enforcement, public safety, and corrections — on the same level as fingerprints after the turn of the 20th century, DNA in the late 1980s, and the pioneering GPS monitoring for high-risk Level 3 sexual predators that I helped advance in Minnesota.” Evenstad emphasized that he has tirelessly advocated for this bill for more than 14 years at great personal expense and under severe retaliation. He described the measure as the single most powerful structural tool available to permanently remove the most dangerous repeat violent offenders from Minnesota communities. “When leaders like Sheriff Fletcher, Marshal Stuart, and the Sheriffs’ Association are willing to listen, progress becomes possible,” Evenstad said. “I am grateful they chose engagement over silence.
