MAA - GOOD WATCH, SOLID CLIMAX - 3 STARS (⭐️⭐️⭐️)
#Maa is a well made mytho-horror film, which follows the basic to get the emotions right. #Kajol is fantastic in the film, and carries the film on her shoulder.
The story telling of this #VishalFuria directorial has pacing issues, and isn’t the run of the mill horror saga - which is a pro & a con too - making it cater primarily to an urban section of audience. The screenplay could move faster in the first half, with more scares too in the narrative.
#Maa peaks with the car sequence in the second half, leading to the ‘Kaali Maa’ song, and the climax. The #VFX is solid, and same can be said for background score.
Overall, #Maa is a smartly designed mytho-horror film, riding on some solid set pieces but warranted a better pace and crisper runtime. It’s a perfect one time watch for the lovers of this genre!

#MaaReview - Works due to a gripping second half
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
In the current times when horror comedies are the norm, #MaaTheFilm is an out and out horror drama with not even an ounce of comedy. That makes the film different as it belongs to the #Shaitaan universe, which means it takes a no-nonsense approach.
The first half of the film is long drawn though and also a bit slow. It’s understandable that an atmospheric mood had to be created. Still, you do miss those really scary or thrilling moments. The interval point is nice but you do long for more well paced narrative.
This is where the second half turns out to be an altogether different beast. Not just it’s fast paced, it also has a lot of jump-scare moments as well as well crafted action sequences. The one in the car featuring #Kajol and her daughter is simply superb and then the climax that shows her #Kaali avtar does bring on goosebumps.
The backstory of the film is a convoluted though and you do need to stress hard to understand the why and the who of it all. Also, at places you expect the characters to really scream their lungs out due to the situation that they are in, but they seem only mildly worried. However, all of this is more than just compensated well by the terrific VFX which is there in most of the scenes. It may seem repetitive after a while but then in the aforementioned two sequences, it’s next level. Moreover, sound design of the film is perfect and the BGM is arresting too.
#Kajol is good in the film and one would have expected her fierce side to be explored even more towards rhe climax. #RonitRoy is fine too though his character arch is predictable. There are a couple of songs which are okay. Cinematography is superb and it captures the night scenes really well instead of making the auditorium dark.
All in all, #Maa is an entertaining film by director #VishalFuria and its graph only keeps getting better and better as it progresses. The film has taken a decent start at the box office and should eventually emerge as a success.
