I rarely do this, but here is one story of mine and the TRUTH about CA and its laws:
During my time as a homicide detective in California, while Gavin Newsom was governor, I worked one of the most frustrating cases of my career.
On a quiet evening a couple of years ago, two brothers who were gang members received information that rivals were parked in a fast-food lot three blocks from their house. The older brother jumped on his motorcycle; the younger brother (just weeks shy of his 18th birthday) climbed on the back, armed with a semi-automatic handgun.
They raced to the parking lot, spotted a car with two young people inside, and mistakenly believed they were the rivals.
Without warning or any exchange of words, the younger brother stood up on the moving motorcycle and emptied his magazine into the vehicle. They fled the scene.
Inside the car were two juveniles. One was killed. The other was paralyzed from the chest down and will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
After months of investigation, we identified and arrested both brothers. Evidence against the shooter was overwhelming: ballistics, surveillance video, witnesses, and his own eventual confession.
Then came the part that still keeps California law-enforcement officers and victims’ families up at night.
Despite the brutality of the crime, murder and attempted murder the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, operating under policies supported by Governor @GavinNewsom, refused to try the shooter as an adult because he was technically a juvenile at the exact time of the offense. The case stayed in juvenile court.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to just four years in a juvenile camp (essentially a low-security youth facility). Because of credits and California’s juvenile release policies, he walked free after serving roughly one year.
The victim who survived and the family of the boy who was murdered received no real sense of justice. As the lead detective, I had to look them in the eye and explain that the system considered a calculated, execution-style murder committed with a firearm from a moving motorcycle to be a “youthful mistake” worthy of little more than a year of consequence.
That case is a stark example of why so many in law enforcement and so many California families feel the pendulum has swung too far: a 17-year-old can plan and execute a murder, yet face dramatically lighter consequences than the gravity of the act demands, all because of a birthday that was weeks away.
That’s the reality we all have to live with under these “soft on crime” policies.
This is the EXACT reason why bad judges need to be held accountable!

And it’s not just this case. Look at Logan Federico. His father testified the suspect had 39 prior arrests, 25 felonies, and the courts still let him walk free. A career criminal who “should’ve been locked up.”
How many families have to suffer before these judges stop protecting predators instead of the people?
