I have the privilege of engaging with a diverse range of professionals in the #IT, #MSP, #MSSP, and #ManagedTechnology sectors, who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. Their years of hands-on experience ensure the highest standards of uptime, security, and reliability in their services.
Following Microsoft's recent #announcement touting #Copilots new feature, named "Recall" - I will draw a much clearer boundary line when individuals passionately insist that #cybersecurity is a core value and priority of Microsoft.
I passionately implore friends and fellow professionals - read the fine print of the Recall feature and see the truth - it is not.
Far too often we see severe security risk, attack surface, and privacy exposure hidden in the fine print of new "Features" promising unprecedented "Benefit" to the user. Look at #IoT and everything it promises:
1 = "Your refrigerator can now tell you the weather based on your location, all it takes is connecting it to the internet."
2 = "Your thermostat can now modify your A/C system's runtime to track when you are away from home, all it takes is connecting it to the internet.
3 = "Your baby monitor can now alert your smartphone with motion detection whenever your child moves in the nursery, all it takes is connecting it to the internet."
As a society we have (generally) warmly welcomed these devices into our homes with an average spend of home network security (optimistically) averaging $99 or less for the everyday consumer. What do threat actors gain if they get access to these devices and the accounts associated with them?
1) Activity data from your fridge which scans the network laterally, for no good reason at all.
2) Location data from your Thermostat which would be awfully handy to someone wanting to break into your home when you were away for work or traveling.
3) Motion & in some cases health vitals of your infant child which - when found in the wrong hands - brings cons that far outweigh getting a simpler point-to-point radio baby monitor (which are now near impossible to find and procure)
What's my point?
My point is we as consumers and businesses feed this beast the more we apathetically go along with it.
I strongly encourage everyone in the infosec, cybersecurity, IT, service delivery, and enterprise network industries to take a good hard look at the precedent being set and realize that #Microsoft is - and will always be - a bastion of a software company that has seldom prioritized privacy and security at the core values of their product line.
Is Microsoft too big to fight? Or is it possible that we ourselves have enabled this trajectory?
