🚨 Butter Bridge V3.1 @ButterNetworkio on #Ethereum was exploited at 2026-05-20T16:13:59Z, allowing an unauthorized mint of 1,000,000,000,000,000 #MAPO @MapProtocol.
💰 Realized loss so far: 52.21 ETH (~$180K) was drained from the Uniswap V4 ETH/MAPO pool after the attacker dumped 1B MAPO. ~999.999B MAPO remains held by the attacker and still poses ongoing risk to any MAPO pool or CEX listing.
🔎 Root cause: the bridge's `retryMessageIn(...)` path accepted an unauthorized retry and forwarded attacker-controlled cross-chain payload data into MAPO's trusted `mapoExecute(...)` mint flow. Seems a likely `abi.encodePacked(...)` collision issue in retry authentication across multiple dynamic-bytes fields.
🧭 Attack trace:
1. A valid inbound message was first made retryable against a receiver address with no code.
2. The attacker then deployed the exploit contract at that exact precomputed address.
3. The exploit contract called retryMessageIn(...) on the bridge with forged retry bytes that still satisfied the stored retry commitment.
4. Once the retry check passed, the bridge dispatched the inbound message into the trusted receiver flow, and the attacker-controlled path led to 1,000,000,000,000,000 MAPO being minted and partially dumped.
