What’s striking to me as a nonclinical metacognition strategist is the article never once uses the word “metacognition”—even though one of its central recommendations is to “think about your thinking” and reflect on how you approached a problem.
To me, that absence is telling.
Thinking about thinking (i.e., psychologist John H. Flavell’s #metacognition) isn’t a separate “type” of intelligence at all, as too frequently it’s unhelpfully being bandied about these days.
Metacognition (“thinking about thinking to improve one’s thinking’s outcomes”) is a willful, purposeful, agentic act—an intelligent expression of self-agency that harnesses our core intelligence in real time.
With the term “core intelligence�� @EnclaveAcademy seeks to bypass defining types or measures of intelligence in favor of “think-activating” each individual’s sense of:
• Intellectual curiosity,
• Intellectual humility,
• Intellectual ethics,
• Intellectual rigor,
• Intellectual generosity, and
• Intellectual gratitude.
Metacognition simply isn’t another item on the intelligence menu of those who propound the notion of “multiple intelligences.”
Metacognition is about the intelligent operator (you?) actively steering the the mind’s “metacognitive regulation machinery.”
Too often we thinker-doers label as a “type” what is actually an act of self-agency.
