در سال ۱۹۶۸ در چنین روزهایی خیابانهای فرانسه به اشغال دانشجویان، دانشآموزان و کارگران درآمده بود. در ۲۲ مارس، در فرانسهی تحت حکومت شارل دوگُل، عدهای از شاعران و موسیقیدانان به ��مراه ۱۵۰ تن از دانشجویان طیفهای چپ در اعتراض به استثمار افسارگسیخته تحت نظام سرمایهداری، شکاف طبقاتی عمیق در فرانسه و و نفوذ و کنترل ساختار بوروکراتیک سیاسی بر بودجهی دانشگاهها، ساختمانی اداری در دانشگاه پاریس، نانتر، را به تصرف درآوردند. در اقدامی مشابه آنچه در دانشگاه کلمبیا و سایر دانشگاهها از جمله در امستردام شاهد بودیم، مدیریت دانشگاه پلیس را برای سرکوب دانشجویان فراخواند. با اینکه این گروه با انتشار بیانیهای و بدون درگیری از دانشگاه خارج شدند، اما مسئولان دانشگاه بر��ی از شرکت کنندگان را که «رهبران جنبش ۲۲ مارس» شناخته شده بودند، به کمیتهی انضباطی دانشگاه فراخواندند. چندی بعد در دوم مِی ۱۹۶۸، مدیریت، دانشگاه را تعطیل اعلام کرد.
در سوم مِی دانشجویان دانشگاه سوربُن در واکنش به برخورد قهرآمیز با دانشجویان، اخراج آنها و تعطیلی دانشگاه، تظاهرات کردند. این تظاهرات به سرعت به دانشگاههای دیگر کشور سرایت کرد و درپی فراخوان UNEF، بزرگترین اتحادیهی دانشجویی فرانسه تا به امروز، و اتحادیهی استادان دانشگاههای فرانسه در ۶ مِی، بیش از ۲۰ هزار تن به سوی سوربُن راهپیمایی کردند. این خیزش مردمی با خشونت و وحشیگری سرکوبگران پلیس فر��نسه که ورودی دانشگاه را بسته بودند، روبرو شد. جمعیت با پرتاب سنگ و ساختن سنگر و مانع از هرچه در دست داشتند، به مقاومت پرداختند. درپی پرتاب گاز اشک آور و ضرب و شتم تظاهر کنندگان، صدها دانشجو بازداشت شدند.
در روزهای سر��وشت ساز پس از ۶ مِی، جنبش دانشجویان به خیزشی سرتاسری بدل شد. اتحادیهی دانشآموزان دبیرستان و معلمانشان نیز به همراه کارگران به اعتراضات پیوستند و طی اعتصابات و اعتراضات عمومی که هفت هفته به طول انجامید، محوطهی دانشگاهها و کارخانهها را در سراسر کشور به تصرف خود درآوردند.
در تاریخ ۱۰ می/۲۱ اردیبهشت ۱۹۶۸، تاریخی که به «شب سنگرها» در پاریس معروف شد، خیزش مردمی فرانسه به اوج رسید. هزاران دانشجو و دانشآموز دبیرستانی شب ۱۰ ماه مِی به خیابانها آمدند و «محلهی لاتین» (Latin Quarter)، محلهای که محوطهی دانشگاه سوربُن در آن واقع شده را به تصرف درآوردند. معترضان ب�� هر آنچه میتوانستند از خیابانها جمعآوری کنند، به سنگربندی در خیابان پرداختند: از بیلبوردهای تبلیغاتی، خودروهای واژگون شده و مصالح ساختمانی تا سنگفرش خیابان.
روزنامهی لُموند در گزارشی از وقایع این شب نوشت «۶۰ سنگر به همین شکل در حال ساخت و مستحکمسازیاند. ارتفاع بعضی از این سنگرها به دو متر میرسد. تظاهرکنندگان سخت به جنب و جوش افتادهاند تا برای محکم کردن سنگرها مصالح بیابند؛ از الوار، ماشین، حلقههای مفتول، بلوکهای سیمانی، تا اسکلهبندی ساختمانها. مکانهای ساخت و ساز ساختمانی همه غارت شدهاند، از جمله کلاهها و جلیقههای ایمنی. بهزودی تپههای انباشته از هر آنچه تظاهرکنندگان توانستهاند با خود بیاورند جمع میشود... نوعی همّت متعالی و تقریبا وسواسگونه بین معترضان دیده میشود، اشتیاقی مسری که به شعف میماند.»
حین اشغال خیابانها در این شب، مردم محل برای معترضان غذا میآوردند، صحنههایی شبیه آنچه در دو هفتهی گذشته در دانشگاههای امریکا شاهد بودیم.
در ساعت ۲:۱۵ صبح روز ۱۱ مِی ۱۹۶۸، پلیس ضدّ شورش برای متفرق کردن تظاهرکنندگان و «پاکسازی» خیابان با گاز اشک آور و چماق وارد جمعیت شد. تظاهرکنندگان با خواندن سرود «مارسِی» و «انترناسیونال» و با سنگهای سنگفرش خیابان به مقاومت پرداختند، درحالی که مردم محل نیز از پنجرههای خود روی دانشجویان آب میریختند تا اثر گاز اشکآور از بین برود. پلیس در پاسخ به همیاری و همبستگی ساکنین محل و معترضان، به داخل خانههای مردم گاز اشک آور شلیک کرد.
در پایان نخستین ساعات بامداد ۱۱ مِی، پلیس بیشتر تظاهرکنندگان را وادار به عقبنشینی کرد اما خشونت عریان این سگان هار سرمایهداری، تنها باعث شعلهور شدن خیزش مِی ۶۸ شد. در واکنش به حملهی وحشیانه به دانشجویان، خیزشی سراسری شکل گرفت که طی آن میلیونها کارگر کارخانه اقدام به اعتصاب عمومی و اشغال ��ارخانهها کردند. بسیاری از این اعتصابات علیرغم وجود اتحادیههای کارگری در فرانسه، به صورت خودجوش و گسترده (wildcat strikes) شکل گرفت.

On #ThisDayInHistory, during the seven-week #May68 protests in #France, students threw up #barricades, leading to pitched battles between riot cops with batons and tear gas vs activists throwing chunks of concrete. In sympathy with the students, a massive #GeneralStrike followed.
The French Revolution version 2.0 continues in Paris.
