#Brushturkeyfacts No 24. Yes, they build mounds 2 m high containing 5 tonnes of material (all shifted by the male), but this is nothing compared to the extinct giant megapodes Sylviornis neocalaedoniae of New Caledonia - their mounds were 5 m high & up to 50 m across. #megapodes

#BrushTurkeyfact No23. Straight up through the soil! After hatching deep down in a mound of soil and leaf litter, chick rest, then dig themselves out. How do they know where up is, down there in the dark, with obstacles in the way? #megapodes are fascinating!

#Brushturkeyfact No19. Friend or foe? No mum to warn me. Dog, snake, raptor, alarm calls of other birds. Chicks instinctively respond sensibly to all such predators, but not to 🐈. Crouching down instead of running doesn’t work for 🐈‍⬛ . Many get killed by cats! #megapodes #birds

Did you know that some species incubate their eggs using underground geothermal heat? Check out how geothermal heat is beneficial for these species here: https://t.co/G3dTswloWj #UtahFORGE #GeothermalEnergy #Megapodes
