Even the @WSJ has doubts. #DonaldTrump's U turn on #Tariffs finds opposite explanations, depending on whether the judgment comes from the right or the left. But one fact is incontrovertible. There are 75 countries that - to use Trump's bold expression - have come forward to #KissHisAss, that is to negotiate. #China has not. In fact, #Trump has increased and not decreased tariffs on China. That opens up two interpretations. The first: to have any impact, words must be backed by action, and on April 2 Trump added #SubstanceToTheThreat: The #US would enact the same tariffs that countries were imposing on the US. Now, with #ReciprocalTariffs, countries finally have an incentive to do what Trump has been asking: to engage in reciprocal tariff and other #NonTariffBarrier reductions. The second meaning goes beyond the #TariffWar. It is strategic, indeed geopolitical. #CommunistChina is a chapter apart. It is isolated from the rest of the world that does business with the United States. This isolation reflects the clash between the American superpower and the superpowerful #Monster that the Americans themselves created thirty years ago. It was #BillClinton's fault. It was #Clinton who opened the doors of the World Trade Organization to China in the late 1990s. It was Clinton who created the monster that is devouring us and against which no #AmericanPresident has done anything. Trump is finally reacting. #KevinOLeary tells CNN: It was about time. China has disregarded the rules of the WTO, has exploited its workers, has stolen our know-how, our intellectual property, has manipulated currencies and the financial system, in addition to spreading the #CovidVirus and poisoning #AmericanYouth. The #USChinaConfrontation goes beyond trade. It is a #GeopoliticalConfrontation. It is precisely China that is the great enemy of the #West and not #PutinRussia which in fact does not even have an economy.
