Michael Collins' funeral was one of the largest in #Ireland with over 500,000 in attendance. That was approximately one fifth of the population of Ireland at the time.

Yesterday was the 104th anniversary of Michael Collins.
The guide a Glasnevin told me his is the only grave there that is never without flowers.

#22agosto 1922 - #MichaelCollins, figura di spicco della Guerra d'indipendenza #irlandese, rimane ucciso in un'imboscata dei repubblicani.
#storia

#OnThisDay #IrishHistory #MichaelCollins It was on August 22, 1922, that Michael Collin’s motorcade was ambushed at Beal na Blath sometime near 8:00pm as it was returning to Cork after a day of touring the surrounding countryside.
Collins had earlier been meeting in Cork city with a group of IRA leaders who remained neutral in the harsh and bitter Irish Civil War. He was very much hoping these intermediaries might prove helpful in arranging direct negotiations with Anti-Treaty IRA officers and that the possibility of a truce might then be discussed.
The motorcade was slowed by a cart placed across the road and an ambush party opened fire. The gunfight lasted about 20 minutes or so and Michael Collins was the only fatality. Tragically so. He was 31 years old.
His courage in resisting—his commitment to defeating—British rule and oppression in Ireland was remarkable and inspired his countrymen to the cause. “Give us the future" Collins once told British authorities "we've had enough of your past…”
My book, Reflections of an Irish Grandson, recounts Ireland’s struggle for freedom--and a family's tragedy-- during the War of Independence.

A poignant detail: some involved had once been his comrades.
Liam Deasy later called Collins “the greatest leader of our generation.”
