🟥 ⛏️ Microcline
is a potassium-rich feldspar mineral with the chemical formula KAlSi₃O₈, the triclinic polymorph of orthoclase and the most common alkali feldspar in many granitic and pegmatitic rocks.

▶️ It crystallizes in the triclinic system, typically forming tabular, prismatic, or blocky crystals with characteristic cross-hatched twinning (Carlsbad-Manebach or Baveno twins) visible as fine intersecting lines on cleavage surfaces, giving it a tartan-like appearance under polarized light.
▪️ It exhibits perfect cleavage in two directions, vitreous to pearly luster, Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, and specific gravity around 2.55–2.63.
▪️ Colors range from white, cream, and pale pink to green (amazonite variety rich in lead and copper), blue-green, or rarely red orange, often with a subtle schiller or adularescence from exsolution lamellae of albite.
▶️ Microcline forms primarily during the slow cooling of silica-rich magmas in plutonic environments such as granites, granodiorites, syenites, and especially large granitic pegmatites.
▪️ Potassium feldspar initially crystallizes as monoclinic sanidine or orthoclase at higher temperatures, but as the magma cools below about 600°C, over millions of years, it undergoes a sluggish phase transition to the ordered triclinic structure of microcline.
▪️ This ordering process is facilitated by the presence of water or volatiles that allow atomic diffusion, leading to the development of its diagnostic cross-hatched twinning.
▪️ Amazonite coloration develops when trace lead and copper enter the lattice during late-stage hydrothermal alteration or fluid interaction in pegmatites.
↘️ Classic localities include the Pikes Peak region in Colorado for amazonite and the alkaline complexes of the Kola Peninsula for large gemmy crystals.
