The majority of my new Year 7s gave the answer 16 to this question in their mini baseline test. At first I thought they'd miscounted the squares but now I realise they've found the perimeter. #misconceptionchat

Some errors from today’s quiz. 20/30 is 60% Not rounding money to 2 decimal places Multiplier for reducing by 12% is 0.12 Reversing a 20% increase by ÷ 0.8 3 4/5 = 12/5 #misconceptionchat

Can see here where students are over confident and highlights again how basic calculations let them down. The dreaded common “reverse percentage change” misconceptions - of which there are many. 🙈🙈 Disclaimer: this is a new class at a new school for me. #misconceptionchat

fascinating: several pupils have said no because “70 is the only number in the 7 times tables ending in 0”. Had no idea that they see times tables as ending at 12, and that this is a risk in equating multiples with times tables #misconceptionchat

@danicquinn Interesting! I saw an unusual misconception today too. Discussing qualitative data having a mode but no mean/median. Student was adamant that the median here is purple because 4 is the middle number when you order the frequencies. Listing the data didn't help! #misconceptionchat

Seeing a lot of this. I need to be more explicit that if a question asks about “shaded” it means the area is the focus. Predicting it will be hard to convince them why 180/360=1/2 isn’t a sound reason! #misconceptionchat

@danicquinn I think it was on @mrbartonmaths podcast with @daisychristo talking about ordering fractions. Misconceptions around ordering fractions when you change the denominator are less addressed than changing the numerator. Love the logical approach! #misconceptionchat

Interesting how the initial problem with his difference (naturally putting 5 as the first denominator) has thrown him off so much. I don’t think I have ever discussed with a class when x/a - x/b will <0. Very organised approach for the rest, though! #misconceptionchat

#misconceptionchat I’m really glad we do a quiz every week. In lessons it seemed things were fine (hard to check on WBs, and I must have been lax when circulating). Fave is that it turns out that “break the speed limit” isn’t something they automatically know the meaning of 😱

#misconceptionchat The things they write when comparing box plot diagrams makes me wonder what on earth theh are experiencing/thinking in lessons. Especially love “this shows the data for grey squirrels”- technically true. 🐿
