According to the Financial Times, the European Central Bank is considering major public blockchains such as Ethereum and Solana as potential platforms for the digital euro—marking a possible shift toward openness and innovation in CBDC design. Using public networks could enable greater transparency, interoperability with existing digital assets, and an open environment for innovation. By contrast, private networks offer more control but limit the wider ecosystem potential of a digital euro. If adopted, this would represent a move away from private systems, aligning more closely with the public stablecoin model seen in the US rather than China’s tightly controlled CBDC framework. The debate also reflects Europe’s concern over reliance on US dollar-pegged stablecoins, which dominate 98% of the global market. Here in the UK, the first FCA-registered GBP-backed stablecoin — tGBP, issued by BCP Technologies — has recently gone live. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has pledged to press ahead with a regulatory framework to support stablecoins and tokenised assets, though some warn the UK must move faster to stay competitive.
