So someone asked me to raise about #mutualabuse #volatile relationship, #mutuallyabusive. Now @DrEmmaKatz explains this far better than me. From what I have witnessed by social workers however and a director of an LA they have no idea and claim abuse is these things. Someone turning up at your property screaming obscenities at you in front of your child and damaging your property, demanding to go through your phone. The person reacts by telling them to get out or they will call the police. The perpetrator sticks his foot in the door to stop the victim from closing it while continuing abuse. The victim kicks his foot to shut and lock the door. That is not mutual abuse. That is abuse by a perpetrator and a victim trying to protect themselves and their child. Yet incidents like this are called mutually abusive. How can that be mutual abuse? How can that be a volatile relationship (post separation or in a relationship). Children's services response and their director is. You were both told to monitor your behaviour. You were told to avoid meeting each other (bit difficult with handover). The onus is put on the 2 parties. Yet it isn't. This is my issue with social services, #socialworkers and #FamilyCourt @MyCafcass. Clearly we have an imbalance of power and instead of any of these professionals holding the perp to account its put on the victim to modify their behaviour too. I hope that's one example that can be used on #DomesticAbuse and bust that myth
