Enter CglB, a #lipoprotein known for >45 y to be essential for #Myxococcus gliding. Structurally, it matches a tip pilin, similar to human α-subunit integrins, w/ a von Willebrand A (VWA) domain containing a MIDAS (metal ion-dependent adhesion site) motif. Lots of disulfides too!

Bacterial focal adhesion (bFA) sites are stationary relative to the underlying substratum, while the #Myxococcus cell glides relative to the stationary bFA. But how do bFAs couple to the substratum and mediate force transduction across the cell envelope by IM H+ motors?

Is OPX size somehow related to the size of the #periplasm in which it’s found? In cryo-electron tomograms of #Myxococcus xanthus, we measured the #periplasm to be 327 Å thick.

FYI, I think you should start looking into that #Myxococcus xanthus bacterium. I hear it's a pretty cool system to study, with much to learn. I dunno, could be a good career decision?
We were thus able to optimize synthesis of a powerful metabolic label for selectively tagging LPS in live cells. For #Myxococcus, going forward, this is crucial for being able to study dynamic OM events such OM vesicle/tube formation & OM exchange, for which Myxo is famous.
Well, what happens in non-aggregating strains? Turns out that PilA-mutant cells (no T4P, no EPS), despite not aggregating, still grow faster in the presence of 7-N3-Kdo (vs slower in 8-N3-Kdo). Hmmm, maybe #Myxococcus just likes to munch on 7-N3-Kdo…

What do these synthetic sugars do to #Myxococcus? Growth in 8-N3-Kdo makes Myxo grow slower…but growth in 7-N3-Kdo makes it grow faster. Overall cell length isn’t really affected though…
