Today, updated measures come into effect in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to help protect the North Atlantic right whale. Ship owners can face a fine of up to $250,000 for violations.

More bad news for a critically endangered species: Another right whale was just found to be suffering from a severe entanglement. The adult male, spotted south of Block Island, has rope "coming out of both sides of its mouth," NOAA reports.
