PC Gamers are not the ones who are panicking. Sony is the one blowing up internally over this. @Microsoft / @Xbox / @satyanadella / @XboxP3 are quasi on track with the #WhatIsAnXbox campaign to be ready with a @XboxGamePassPC / @XboxGamePass #NativeClient for @OnDeck which positions them to just sell content onto whatever platform @valvesoftware deploys. One of the reasons I keep pestering them for an actual time and date release for a native client. Adding Valve's Proton layer as a targeted API test, and including the #SteamDeck as a targeted hardware platform, for the Xbox Software ecosystem positions Microsoft to offer content products where-ever, when-ever, regardless of hardware ISA or operating system. Which is great for subscribers. Microsoft's best play here should be to position themselves as a #ReferencePlatform. Consider three distinct optimization levels: 1280x720@30fps SteamDeck/Mobile 1920x1080@60fps Xbox S 4k@120fps Xbox X If a game will hit those targets then it SHOULD be able to run on any platform, in an acceptable detail level, regardless of who MAKES that platform. Valve is just the obvious choice for that lower end specification because Valve is already working on decoupling a game from a specific hardware and software layer. To be fair Microsoft's executives have made a number of egregiously terrible hiring decisions recently so whether or not Microsoft actually has the internal talent to pull off repositioning themselves as a reference platform is questionable. Sony, however, is on a warpath to make Microsoft look like a shining beacon of good behavior by comparison. Sony isn't prepared for Yet Another Television Contender to enter the market, nor is Sony positioned in such a way that they can still make money off another contender in the market. PC Gaming going 10ft UI is a serious threat to Sony... especially with Valve's deep library of games that players already own and wouldn't need to repurchase in order to play. So, we'll see how this shakes out.
