▶️ Featuring irregular sheets and dendrites of metallic, reddish-copper native copper (Cu) embedded in a vesicular basalt matrix.
The specimen displays vibrant green epidote (Ca₂(Al,Fe)₃(SiO₄)₃(OH)) as fibrous or columnar crystals filling amygdules, alongside white to translucent patches of calcite (CaCO₃) or prehnite (Ca₂Al₂Si₃O₁₀(OH)₂) veins that exhibit rhombohedral cleavage and vitreous luster.
Dark greenish-black chlorite or altered basalt forms the groundmass, with subtle orange-red tinges likely from minor cuprite (Cu₂O) oxidation products.
The slab measures approximately 10-15 cm across, with a Mohs hardness ranging from 2.5 (calcite) to 3 (copper), and it polishes to a high sheen, highlighting the metallic luster of the copper against the contrasting textures of the secondary silicates and carbonates.
▶️ The native copper in this slab formed during the Mid-Proterozoic era around 1.06 billion years ago amid the rifting of the North American continent during the Midcontinent Rift event, when mafic basaltic lavas (Portage Lake Volcanics) erupted and flowed across the landscape, creating gas pockets (amygdules) and interflow conglomerates.
Hydrothermal fluids, likely hot basinal brines rich in copper leached from underlying sediments or volcanic sources, circulated through fractures and vesicles in the cooling basalt at temperatures of 150-250°C.
Upon encountering reducing conditions, pH shifts, or mixing with cooler meteoric waters, the solubilized copper precipitated as elemental metal, often with minor silver alloys, while siliceous and carbonated waters deposited associated gangue minerals like epidote and prehnite through metasomatic replacement.
Subsequent glacial and fluvial erosion during the Pleistocene exposed these deposits near the surface, enabling mining from the 1840s to the 20th century.
