You just made it easier to use courtyard urbanism to turn parking lots into housing AND green space.
You can add a LOT of density while reducing impervious surface.
Take an old commercial site that is 80–90% building + asphalt.
Replace it with compact 5–6 story buildings around a planted courtyard.
You get more homes, more family-friendly homes, less asphalt, more trees, more permeable surface, etc.
That’s because density doesn’t require covering more land. It requires using the land you build on more efficiently.
Build compactly around the edges. Put homes above shops. Then give the center of the block back to vegetation, people, and water.
