Time for another Parman #nerdtip...
Have you ever cloned a repository from GitHub? It's a superpower and it goes like this:
Definitions first...
[[
- Clone means copy exactly
- Repo/repository is a directory with stuff in it
- ~ means home directory, typically /home/username
- Terminal is the text control centre of your computer
- "cd" is a command, "change directory"
- GitHub is a website where public repos live
]]
Say you wanted to clone my Parmanode repository. You found the GitHub page, but now what? (BTW, don't install Parmanode this way, I have an install script which is on the website). Anyway, look at the URL for the page, it's...
https://t.co/JYNqzpa1gt
This is the format for all GitHub repositories. The Github domain, followed by the user, followed by the repo.
Next, you find a nice place for it on your computer (you might want very smol terminal skills, not much, and you can learn that from a quick YouTube video searching "Linux command line intro", and works with Macs too).
You can do "cd ~" gets you in the Home directory. Then "mkdir messingaround" to make a directory called messingaround. Then go into it, "cd ~/messingaround".
Now from there, clone the practice repository...
git clone https://t.co/JYNqzpa1gt SOMENAME
That's all one line, with 4 things separated by a space.
This "clones" the repository into a new directory called "SOMENAME". You now have a complete copy of the code on your computer. If you leave out SOMENAME, then the default new directory name will be the repo name, in this case, "parmanode".
To update the repo - eg when there are changes to the original, just navigate to the directory on your machine, "cd ~/messingaround/SOMENAME", and then do "git pull", which "pulls" the latest version and overwrites what's on your local machine to the new state.
Go ahead and practice.
Also worth knowing that all git repositories are a directories with a .git hidden directory at the base, which keeps track of changes. That's sort of the point of git. It keeps track of changes so you can go back and forth in time in that directory. You take snapshots with the "git commit" command. This is of course useful for developers but you can take advantage of it for your personal text files too. Doesn't work so great for binary files and images or videos etc. You can turn any directory into a git repo by navigating to it, then typing "git init". You can convert it back to a normal directory by deleting the hidden ".git" directory.
Also worth knowing is that GitHub is a place where you CAN put git repositories, either public or private. You don't need to, GitHub just works as a backup location and a public distribution server.
I have private repos on GitHub, and I have git repos on my local machine that I haven't necessarily stored on GitHub.
Anyway, one extra cool thing is that you can clone a repo on your local machine (never having existed even on GitHub) to another machine, like this.
Say I have /home/parman/ways_to_scam_for_more_bitcoin as a git repo on my machine1 (with local IP 192.168.0.124)...
Then on machine2, I can do this...
git clone [email protected]:/home/parman/ways_to_scam_for_more_bitcoin NEW_DIRECTORY
Then it copies to machine two.
Then as I work on machine one, make changes to the contents, and take snapshot, eg
git add .
(full stop necessary)
then
git commit -m "some_helpful_message_to_store"
then from machine 2, I can do "git pull", and it copies the new changes.
Cool? I think it's pretty cool.
Oh, last last thing...
A pull request, is when a public git repo allows contributions, and you first clone it, make changes, then submit it as a "pull request". Then the owner of the GitHub repo, will see the requst, and if approved, "pull" the changes into their version. Then the repo has changed and users can "pull" from GitHub to their local machines for a newer version.
A quick Parman #NerdTip for the day.
The find command on Unix systems (Linux and Mac) is super powerful and hard to learn which had put me off initially - but you don't need to know all that to get a lot out of it. Just know something very basic, and add to the options at your immediate disposal as you use it.
find ./ -name "somefileordir"
You type find, then the root of where you want to begin searching, "./" means from this directory, but you could change it to "/home/chad/HFSP_memes/"
then for options, unusually, it's a single hyphen. -name followed by what you're searching for in quotes. You can use wildcards or regex if you know that (use -regex or -iregex).
If you want to narrow down the search to a file but not a directory, or a directory a not a file, you can, but no need when you're first starting.
You might have terabytes of files, and you just want to know where the "xgirlfriend_nudes_2014" directory is. Easy...
find ./home/chad/pictures/ -type d -name "?eather_?raham"
This command will search through the pictures directory, go through the thousands of ex-girlfriend directories, ignore files, and filter out any that match the pattern in the quotes. If you spell Heather Graham with uppercase or lowercase, the match will hit. But better to do it this way...
find ./home/chad/pictures/ -type d -iname "*heather*graham*"
I used "iname" instead of "name" to enable case insensitivity and added a * at the start, end and middle. That way all directories that have the name with any prefix, postfix, or separator will match, and they'll all be listed. If you don't use such wildcards, and you misspell something by one character, it won't find it. You could be more flexible and use -iname "h*" which will match all girlfriends starting with "h" or "H".
Sometimes you need to add "sudo" at the start of the command (superuser do) if the directories are admin-only.
Also, if you've got no idea where the file might be, you can use a / as the search path, basically the whole file system. It's slower but thorough.
