#SciOTD 𝗣𝗘𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚’𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗕𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗟𝗔 On this day in 2011, Typhoon #PedringPH (#Nesat) crossed Northern Luzon, but much of its damage was reported in Metro Manila and Central Luzon, where the surge of habagat brought the waters of Manila Bay far inland and met with the flashfloods rushing down from the uplands. Tropical Cyclone PEDRING (international name: NESAT) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as a Tropical Storm on 24 September 2011 and steadily intensified as it headed towards Luzon. It intensified into a Typhoon, packing winds of up to 150 km/h before making landfall over northern Aurora in the early morning of 27 September. It crossed mainland Luzon until afternoon, unleashing destructive winds and torrential rains along its path - especially over Aurora, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, and Pangasinan. Though Metro Manila and surrounding provinces were relatively far from the typhoon's direct path, its enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) surged as if it were a tropical cyclone by itself. Many residents, especially along the coastal cities of Metro Manila, such as Navotas, Valenzuela, Malabon, Manila, Pasay, Parañaque, and Las Piñas, woke up with strong wind gusts, flying debris, and wave surges from Manila Bay that effectively destroyed the seawall and houses along the coast and flooded up to a kilometer inland with salty seawater. Even the US Embassy and the Sofitel, a big hotel, were damaged and flooded by the surge of waves. Many were surprised as the sea swelled fast amidst strong winds and torrential rains. The Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center had to evacuate patients after its ground floor flooded. Elsewhere, the torrential downpours of Pedring and habagat also flooded many areas in Northern and Central Luzon and its violent winds flattened wide swaths of farmlands. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the typhoon left at least 85 people dead, the vast majority were due to drowning in Central Luzon, and 15.55 billion pesos worth of damage, making it one of the costliest typhoons in Philippine history.
