@Civixplorer The Baltic states were never Soviet, so don't wave the flags imposed by the occupiers.

@dwnews Calling Moldova after 34 years of independence former soviet is insulting, call Germany "former" nazi country then. #neversoviet
Atceramies un iegaumējam arī mēs Latvijā. #NeverSoviet

@BadBalticTakes I thought the #neversoviet sentiments are a big reason 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 and 🇪🇪 people tolerated the (intense) pain of the post-Soviet "shock therapy" economic reforms. I'm oversimplifying, I know, but that wasn't the case in Russian society where Soviet nostalgia is widespread to this day.
This is a truly excellent article: https://t.co/07Ne5m2uX0
The soviet union that invaded us, like the russian federation invading Ukraine right now, are just rebranded russian empires - as the article well explains.
Yet the international discourse about russia has been shaped by russian imperial denialism, the erasure of its victims, and the marginalisation of Russia’s neighbours and their perspectives.
Russia’s neighbours have patiently accommodated this, having to listen to lectures about how russia is modernising and we’re just too emotional or paranoid or russiaphobic to understand there’s no more threat from them.
We’re done with that. We’re asserting our agency and our perspectives - and, fortunately, more people than ever before are listening.
Many “russia experts” - who could previously saunter between the studios of RT and respectable western media outlets to spill their takes imbued with russian chauvinism - are still coming to terms with the fact that their game is up. They lash out at the “pro-Ukraine infowar industry” because they can’t understand that there are many millions of people whose very real experiences of russia don’t match the perspectives they learnt in Moscow.
But they got russia totally wrong over decades - right up to the moment that russia’s full scale invasion force was poised for genocide against Ukraine. We got russia right.
It is past time for the rest of the world to open its eyes to the reality of russian imperialism, which threatens the entire world’s anti-imperial system of sovereign nations.
A minor quibble with the article is that it mentions the re-occupation of the Baltic states after WW2 without mentioning the start of the occupation as a result of the nazi-soviet pact, which also started WW2. It comes back to the world’s failure to understand russian imperialism that we can’t assume something as significant as that is already widely known.
Nevertheless, it’s a good article so read it, share it, and help change the discussion of russia so we can all finally break its cycle of imperial aggression.

🎉 The Associated Press just updated its style guide. It now officially recommends avoiding the term ‘former Soviet republic(s)’.
