In predicting ion transport properties in all solid-state battery #materials, machine learning interatomic potential (MLIPs) have been widely used, however, their reliability across diverse materials’ chemistries remains unquantified. #AI4Science
In this study, we benchmark six state-of-the-art MLIPs ( CHGNet, EquiformerV2 finetuned on OMAT + MPtraj, and OMAT only, MatterSim, SevenNet, and MACE MPA) on representative Li and Na-based superionic conductors. We compared the atomic forces, diffusion coefficient, and second- and third-order interatomic force constants against corresponding density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) values.
Our findings reveal a clear correlation between force prediction accuracy and ion transport property prediction. Models with lower force error exhibit diffusion coefficient values that are in close agreement with AIMD, whereas models with larger error show greater deviation. This trend further reveals that accurate reconstruction of the potential energy surface is required for reliable ion transport simulation. The EquiformerV2 model finetuned on OMAT only, achieved the lowest force error and closest agreement with AIMD diffusion coefficients. While current MLPs reasonably reproduce second-order force constants, all models exhibit significant errors in third-order force constants, highlighting ongoing challenges in capturing strong anharmonicity in superionic conductors.
