Current AI runs into a problem I'll call 'mode collapse' which prevents it from genuine scientific discovery. My group will continue to work on a new AI paradigm called "Investigative Intelligence" that will enable novel discoveries by mitigating mode collapse. This work is based on the work we've been doing around diversity, which I believe to be the right primitive for discovery.

It was an absolute honor to be this year's keynote speaker for the @FieldMuseum's Women in Science Luncheon. I met truly wonderful people. More than $300K was raised toward initiatives that support women in STEM.
My keynote traced the history of AI---a fascinating journey of ambition, hitting walls, and breaking through them---and looked ahead to its future. Going forward we face an important choice in how we build these systems: we can dismiss diversity and build AI that simply imitates us, or we can embrace diversity and build AI that partners with us to explore the unknown and expand human knowledge.
I shared how we are actively doing this work through algorithmic diversity @Vertaix_ and human diversity @theafricaiknow_.

#NewPaper Out-of-distribution detection is important for the safe deployment of AI systems and for scientific discovery. In a new paper led by @apasarkar22, we introduce the ✨Vendi Novelty Score✨, a new flexible novelty and OOD detector that frames OOD detection from a diversity perspective. VNS is linear-time (fast) and achieves state-of-the-art performance on OOD detection benchmarks.
Bonus: it is low-resource-friendly in that it retains that good performance using only 1% of the training data.

Building Privasis requires no seed data beyond first names. We use auxiliary variables to generate realistic records (which you can control!), then apply a diversity-preserving refinement method based on the Vendi score. We open our code to let you build your own Privasis!
