“The structure of a feature is like a necklace,” said @emmasthomson. “You have your pearls, the golden moments, which you arrange in a flowing order before threading them together. The clasps represent the intro and ending, which tie the whole thing together.” #NGTMasterclasses
“While on assignment, travel with two sets of eyes,” said travel photographer @benrobertsphoto. “One to fulfil the brief, and one for what you see along the way. This could lead to a separate set of images that could be used as a new idea to pitch later on.” #NGTMasterclasses
“Many features I see from new writers are written chronologically,” said travel writer @poloconghaile. “Sometimes, the action even starts with the plane journey, which, unless there were snakes on the plane, there’s no excuse for. Start somewhere interesting.” #NGTMasterclasses
“Shoot a variety of shots in the destination to give the editor the option to choose the images that fit with the writer’s words,” said travel photographer @lolaakinmade. “Only a few images are used within a piece, but you should spoil the editor with choice.” #NGTMasterclasses
“When writing an intro, put your trip notes aside and see what bubbles to the surface,” said travel writer @emmasthomson. “Was there a shocking moment? A thrilling moment? A funny moment? If it's memorable to you, chances are it'll be intriguing to the reader.” #NGTMasterclasses
