@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller @malorieblackman @lolashoneyin Some top recommendations there! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat @OyinBraithwaite #NibbiesChat
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller Anything by @malorieblackman. Also a fan of Helen Oyeyemi and Lesley Nneka Arimah. For fantasy, I'd say Robin Hobb. I have all the books she wrote under that name. Anne Rice, though I havent read her in a while. Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by @lolashoneyin #nibbieschat
@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller It is great news isn't it. One last question, when people get to their local bookshop, what should they buy? Which authors have most influenced you, or do you particularly admire? #NibbiesChat
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller I've always loved Waterstones. I have a lot of happy Waterstones memories. But in the past year I visited so many darling independent bookstores; it is hard to choose just one. I'm so pleased that they are able to go back into business. #Nibbieschat @thebookseller
@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller That is a great title; you have a knack for strong titles clearly!
With UK bookshops starting to slowly open now, can you tell us about your favourite bookshop - where is it, and what do you love about it? #NibbiesChat #ChooseBookshops
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller The story is called The Baby is Mine. I have no idea what I'm allowed to reveal outside of that...so I'll play it safe and keep mum for now. 2/2 #nibbieschat @thebookseller
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller Yes, I'm very excited about it. I was approached via my agent and told about what they do and I was happy to be a part of an initiative to entertain whilst also creating work that would be easy for someone who perhaps wouldn't normally read or who might struggle. 1/2 #nibbieschat
@OyinBraithwaite @aliceokbooks @thebookseller Reading the story I wondered if your idea for it began with a woman who likes to excessively clean as a form of passive aggression - and then that led to an extreme version of cleaning up after a spoilt sister! Lol! Seriously, where did the idea start? #NibbiesChat
@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller Yup, everyone is looking forward to your next book (no pressure!). News just announced - you will be a #QuickReads author next year. That is so exciting! How did that come about & can you tell us anything about the story?
#NibbiesChat
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller Best thing? All the free books I get! And also just knowing I fulfilled my dream... 2/3 #nibbieschat @thebookseller
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller We do! The story, my immediate sibling circulates is that I tried to smother her when I was a toddler and she was a baby... but it is fake news - she was making a lot of noise and I wanted to help by covering her with a blanket... 1/3 #Nibbieschat
@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller Us big sisters have to put up with a lotπ. This is your first novel, so tell us, what's the best thing about being a published novelist? (And the worst?!) #NibbiesChat
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller Thank you! I'm the eldest, so I can also emphasize with her. #nibbieschat @thebookseller
@OyinBraithwaite @aliceokbooks @thebookseller She's passive in the way more sensible sisters in a family are: she accepts her sister's foibles, shall we call them, in a recognisable way. She's totally believable in just backing her sister no matter what. I love her! I need someone like that in my corner. #NibbiesChat
@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller Perfect sense! I so enjoyed her deadpan take on what is a pretty extreme situation. And I loved that the central relationship of the novel is between two sisters (I am an elder sister so could relate to Korede's feeling that it's her job to look after Ayoola!) #NibbiesChat
@OyinBraithwaite @thebookseller Did you always know you were going to tell the story from the point of view of calm, practical nurse Korede, rather than her murderous little sister? #NibbiesChat
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller @OyinBraithwaite I'm reading this now. So much talk about it, and it is as darkly funny and relatable as everyone said. #NibbiesChat
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller After each murder, Ayoola reaches out to her sister for help, but Korede is beginning to doubt that these murders are in fact an act of defense... 2/2 #Nibbieschat @thebookseller
@aliceokbooks @thebookseller My Sister the Serial Killer is about two sisters, Korede who is uptight and hardworking, Ayoola who is beautiful, fickle and who also happens to be a serial killer 1/2. #Nibbieschat @thebookseller
