RECORD: NIÑO 1+2: #NiñoCostero mantiene condición de evento extraordinario y es holgadamente más cálido (+5.3°C valor de la última semana) que eventos previos para la fecha. Esta semana la #NOAA presenta un salto de +0.6°C en la anomalía. Ello obliga a elevar a +6°C el eje de valores de calentamiento. Supera en +1.6° a la anomalía de esta misma fecha de 1997. Notable.
#Temperaturas en la costa peruana superarían a las observadas, durante lo que resta de la primavera y el verano, a los eventos extraordinarios de 1997-1998 y 1982-1983.

While the #NOAA official record goes back to 1950, reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature (SST) datasets extend back to the late 1800s. I previously looked at data going back to 1900, although my focus then was on correlations with #Florida climate.
I haven’t yet explored the full historical timeline in detail, but the fact that both #ElNiño and #LaNiña occurred throughout this period you mentioned is significant.
Interestingly, for #Ethiopia, both phenomena can contribute to #drought, depending on where you are and the year. The key difference is that they can shift which parts of the country are more affected and how the impacts manifest.
