Day15 rematch: 8-6 Kotoshōhō (L) vs 9-5 Daieishō. Watch where gyōji points. There was a monoi’ii AGAIN (rip that kenshō out of gyōji’s hands), but not overturned. #novbasho2020
Day15: Gyōji called it for Daieishō but slo-mo reveals Kotoshōhō’s quickness and flexibility kept his off dohyō so mono’ii decision was rematch. #novbasho2020
Day15 Dohyō winding brawl with a twisty photo finish! 8-6 wiley usurper Kotoshōhō (L) vs tsuppari master Daieishō. #novbasho2020
Day15 Seems like most every bout today was short, but (mostly) good. 8-6 Churanoumi (L) vs 5-9 Shōhōzan. It’s also yet another KOTENAGE - elbow lock throw. #novbasho2020
Day15 jūryō: 9-5 Ura (L) vs 4-10 Ikioi. Both these two are such troopers in the face of adversity. Somehow this seems like just the right matchup for their final day of basho. #novbasho2020
I’ve watched this too many times, basho in review, packed with all they could fit in. #novbasho2020
Day15 jūryō: 4-10 Sadanoumi (L) vs 8-6 Ishiura. I knew that the crowd in pre-covid times acted as a buffer for flying rikishi, but I didn’t realize how much.. #novbasho2020
Day15 Quick, but man! Hōshōryū (L) vs Endō, one goes KK, one goes MK. This is their first meeting. The drama. 🙂 #novbasho2020
Day15 Great bout from Enhō (L) and Tobizaru, of course! They’ve met three times in jūryō only, with E having a 2-1 edge. (and E made the cut all 15 days on my feed, who’dathunk?) #novbasho2020
Takakeishō’s yūshō: Playing the national anthem “Kimigayo” while Keishō looks on. Crowd of course asked to sing “in their hearts” in age of COVID. It really is beautiful music, no? #novbasho2020
Takakeishō receiving Emperor’s Cup then Prime Minister’s cup. He was misty-eyed the whole time. It is only his 2nd yūshō, it’ll be a few more before he can do it totally dry eyed. #novbasho2020
Day15 jūryō playoff! Midorifuji (L) and Kyokushūhō (actually pulled it off, and forced a playoff, good on him!). Shūhō let’s Midori get inside, head pinned to chest, which is the last place you want him. #novbasho2020
Day15 And the playoff! Terunofuji (R) prevailed and evened wins with Takakeishō to force a playoff. Can Teru pull off two in a row, blunting Keishō’s attack or will Keishō keep his cool and engage his precision charge? #novbasho2020
Day15 Last regulation bout! If bowling ball ōzeki Takakeishō wins he takes first yūshō in 2 years. If grappler extraordinaire komusubi Terunofuji can stop his advance and take him down, he forces an immediate playoff. Popcorn ready? #novbasho2020
Day14 From venue - makuuchi east dohyō-iri. I like the “snaking” in angle here. M’man Aqua heads the wobbling conga line (being at bottom of makuuchi rankings). #novbasho2020
Day14 In Aqua’s KK interview - Flashing that killer smile and sharing the story that he got bumped into from behind by a DUMP TRUCK on way to basho, 4th or 5th day. He’s in pain but it somehow has helped him to concentrate and improve his sumo he said. #novbasho2020
Day14 jūryō: Big bout for Akiseyama (L), he virtually locks in only 2nd ever makuuchi aprnc w/ win and KK here. Foe is J8 Kyokutaisei, who could also get KK. #novbasho2020
Day14 jūryō: Ura (L) vs Mongol Azumaryū. Posted this from venue, here is a better look. Ura said later he wasn’t going for this rare kimarite, he just adapted to the position he found himself in. USHIROMOTARE, backward lean out. #novbasho2020
Day14 Two favs: Aqua (L) can get his KK here vs Kotoekō who could go MK. I was going to edit in all the ultra-annoying matta that led up to this short bout, but I got too annoyed. Aqua has lost their last two meetings. #novbasho2020
Day14 Kiribayama (L) vs Tobizaru. Two MK locked newcomers who will see better basho as they develop. They came up thru jūryō together so have met 5 times with TZ so far having an edge. #novbasho2020
