Could increasing #oceanalkalinity help it take up more CO2 from the atmosphere? And even if so, is it safe + effective?
#WHOI scientist @AdamSubhas shared his thoughts during the recent @BostonGlobe Summit.

Do you want to learn more about #oceanalkalinity enhancement as a #CDR option during the Easter holidays? Listen in as #CDRmare scientist Michael Fuhr explains his latest paper and research to podcaster REVIEWER 2. https://t.co/oN2rop0ZSX
#WHOI has been selected as a grantee of the @ICONIQGrowth Impact Ocean Co-Lab!
A grant will support @AdamSubhas lab's #oceanalkalinity experiments, which aim to enhance the oceanβs ability to absorb and store CO2 from the atmosphere.

#WHOI's @AdamSubhas recently started testing #oceanalkalinity enhancement in a small-scale field study with non-toxic dye. With @RutgersU, he's also looking at impacts on phytoplankton.

#CoastalEnhancedWeathering (CEW) via the addition of the common mineral #Olivine to coastal waters is one promising approach to enhance #OceanAlkalinity for large-scale #CDR.
π To monitor the responses (#physiological & #biogeochemical) of keystone phytoplankton groups to olivine dissolution products and
implications for #CarbonDioxideRemoval via #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement, researchers grew "several globally important #phytoplankton functional groups under elevated concentrations of olivine dissolution products using a #synthetic olivine leachate (OL) based on olivine elemental composition," a new preprint reported.
π Results suggest "olivine dissolution products appear unlikely to cause #negative effects for #marine #phytoplankton, even at high concentrations, and may support the growth of particular taxa under some conditions; for example, the non-N2-fixing #picocyanobacterium could use synthetic olivine-derived iron for growth."
π‘ "Future studies can also shed light on determining how biological processes like #photosynthesis, #respiration, and organic ligand production could influence olivine dissolution #kinetics and their impacts on carbon dioxide removal."

Great learning of cutting-edge research from @WHOI scientists, #oceanalkalinity #Oceanography. #ocean can help to further help to reduce carbon from the atmosphere #COP27
@HUCEnvironment @ALIHarvard

The closing remarks by @mesarosch & @laura_kraft_ @gruenebundestag opened the #marineCDR theme tables, where the participants had breakfast & exchanged ideas about #marineCCS, #blueCarbon, #OceanAlkalinity, #ArtificialUpwelling, legal/policy issues & its assessment framework. 4/5
